The music is composed by Carl M. Steubing and the words are from a poem written by Carl’s good friend Miles J. Martin.  The opening lyrics, “Who is that man�, refers to an older Asian gentleman Miles encountered during vacation in the Far East. They were strangers that could not communicate, but when their eyes met they smiled at each other, and Miles recognized the man as his brother.  Shortly thereafter Miles sat down and wrote the poem called “Brothers�. Carl M. Steubing wrote the music, and it was published in 1967. This song was very relevant back in 1967 but has even more significance today. Brothers (and sisters) around the world are looking to belong in our chaotic world. They are searching for more connections, more empathy, and more love for each other.  No matter where you are from, the color of your skin, the faith you follow, or the person you choose to love, may we all find a way to look into each other’s eyes, smile and see in each other our brother or sister.

When commissioning Rejoice and Sing it was our intention not only to have a concert work written for our Youth Chorale but also a work that would be an instrument in teaching Hassidism, for what better way is there to teach Hassidism than through its music. We also wanted to demonstrate that authentic Hassidic music can be arranged in a sophisticated musical manner without having to sacrifice the inherent folk nature and simplicity that is so indicative of Hassidic song. We were most fortunate in securing the talents of Sholom Kalib to carry out this project with us. Dr. Kalib from youth has been steeped with a unique blend of love and understanding of traditional Jewish music and a very high degree of general musicianship. He succeeded in turning these basically simple tunes into a highly inventive musical work without sacrificing the legitimate qualities of the material with which he was working. They believed that animals, plants and even rocks had a life and a spirit. And they considered trees to be the most important elements. Trees symbolized life: the roots were in the Underworld, the branches in the Otherworld and the trunk in the Middle Earth. Trees gave the Celtics wood to build homes and weapons and to shelter them from the cold. They also shielded them from the sun with their shadow. Trees gave them fruit to eat and they lodged birds, the messengers of the Gods, in their branches. Trees protected people’s spirits and so each person was assigned a sacred tree according to their date of birth.Even today we still have spirits and objects that protect us. In the case of artists, their own art is often their protector. The title of this song refers to the ivory angel, the piano, however, this song is dedicated to all the instruments that help us express ourselves and prevent us from being lonely, silent or forgotten. Bush puts herself in the shoes of a man waiting outside the delivery room as his wife gives birth. The song explores his vulnerability at this tense moment. This SSSAA arrangement plays with the form of the original song, whilst incorporating all the themes and hooks that we know from Bush's version. It offers a variety of different textures throughout, handing the melody around and moving between a free chorale-like opening to a steady pulse for the bulk of the arrangement. There is an additional descant soprano part on the top stave, which could be sung by a soloist or a small group. The key bars for this part are 12-15 & 26-28 , where we hear the iconic opening motif. The other passages of this descant can be omitted as necessary depending on the ensemble's skill level. This was arranged especially for Chaps Choir's 10 year celebration concert in 2023. However, in the publisher’s intention, these pieces would have to possess a number of specific features: simplicity, neutral expressivity, positivity, in order to be functional to the objective. Mario Totaro accepted the challenge, and the five bagatelles published in this volume are his personal «answer».Maintaining a balance between individuality and business needs can be very difficult, as it can be hard to reach a certain level of «acceptability» in this field. Difficult, but not impossible. Yet such a challenge can also be as stimulating as amusing experience. Moreover, these bagatelles prove it: despite being quite simple, they reveal a care for detail and a significant daintiness; they are indeed expressive, but they refer to the imagination of their author; finally, they are functional to their purpose without showing it, as too often happens to a certain type of «musical wallpaper» to which we are accustomed. In short, Totaro can measure out all the elements without sacrificing his compositive personality or artistic integrity, and this is definitely a goal that not all composers (sometimes even the biggest) can achieve.
