Central to Villa-Lobos’s compositional language is Brazilian folk music – he spent his formative musical years playing popular songs on the streets of Rio de Janeiro – but also using elements of European classical works and influenced by French music, creating his unique sound world. Sexteto Mistico is a unique composition in one movement, consisting of short sections, each bringing unexpected richness, strangeness, virtuosity and polyrhythms. The opening is diaphanous and other-worldly; instruments enter in turn as if introducing themselves, continually weaving their dreamlike harmonies. In the next segment we’re taken into a dark, atmospheric oboe solo; this, to rippling accompanying arpeggios, twists and turns with lyrical eeriness. In the final section the theme, that the repeated motif had been hinting at, clearly emerges, leading us to a bright conclusion. Gene Kellys dances and sings in the 1952 sound film of the same name.Already after the Second World War, the song became a jazz standard and was performed by artists such as Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, John Serry Sr., Sammy Davis Jr. and Doris Day, just to name a few artists. In 2004, the American Film Institute ranked the song third in its list of the 100 best American film songs.The song was adapted for the Kalimba with 17 tines and provided with reed numbers/symbols. These symbols are briefly explained in the appendix and can also be seen on most Kalimbas. The classic musical notation and/or the lyrics help to develop the song, so that even those unfamiliar with music notes can learn to play the song with this arrangement. Poet and musician came together to give to us the hymn we know today, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save�.   This hymn, popularized by the Royal Navy and the United States Navy in the 19th century, has since been adopted by other armed services for official use.  Today it stands as one of the most famous hymns in Christendom.  This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble (with minor divisi) to be performed a cappella.  It uses only the text of Whiting’s original poem.   Performance time: 3.30+-.

The first stanza of Heber's Bread of the world in mercy broken focuses on the forgiveness of sin and sinners by Christ's grace as they gather at the Lord's table, while Conder's Bread of heav'n, on thee we feed emphasizes the restoration to health and wholeness of those who eat and drink of Christ's Body and Blood. Both texts refer to the sacramental bread and wine as the gifts by which our souls are fed. The lyrics are partially anonymous but most published versions include verses that seem to have been added by the arranger of that version. This Epiphany song has similar themes to We Three Kings but is definitely a refreshing change from that well known tune. This fun arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for Baritone soloist, SATB choir, a woodwind instrument, and bass instrument. Included is sheet music for C, Bb, and Eb instruments and a bass line which can be played by many different bass instruments depending on what the group has available. The instrumentalists can transpose their parts to different octaves for ease of playing if necessary. The Baritone soloist should be a well experienced intermediate singer and the bass line is very active at times, but the choir and woodwind parts should be performable by most intermediate groups.
