Reflective and subdued, the interplay between Stevens’ piano and  Iimori’s oboe is effortless and flowing. Autumn Wind picks up the pace a bit, but continues the easy flow, bringing images of  leaves swirling. Signs of Winter is a bit darker and more mysterious. Iimori is a big fan of Paul McCandless, and that musician’s influence is very strongly heard in these first three pieces - a very good thing! In Clouds,  Iimori switches from oboe to English horn. This duet with the piano is a dramatic musical depiction of the gathering clouds and anticipation of a coming thunder storm. I really like it a lot!  Snow is tranquility set to music. Sparrow’s Song brings us to the beginnings of spring - the freshness in the air, and the joyful songs of birds in the yard. July reflects the laziness of a hot summer day. Season’s Reprise brings together the  themes from the various seasons, creating a lovely closing to the Suite.

This little choral prayer has a text from St. Anselm of Canterbury (ca. 1330), slightly revised by me to make it more inclusive. “Illuminate and inspire, we beseech thee, all thinkers, writers, artists and crafters.� And I love that it allows us “to rejoice in beauty.� I found this text on the wall of a side chapel in Canterbury Cathedral in 1983 and set it originally in 1984 as a memorial to one of my uncles, my father’s brother, who was a skilled landscape artist. A few years later, I plucked up the courage to write the music, firstly for Choir a Cappella or with Piano ad libitum, followed by a version for Brass Quintet and another for Soprano or Tenor and Piano. This new edition for Voice has been revised in its entirety.The English translation of the text at the end of the score is not intended to be sung. In 1988 my wife and I were sent by our church to take part in the World Conference on Liturgical Music in Rome at the Vatican.  It was so exciting for us to go on our first trip to the Eternal City!!  We took a taxi to the Vatican and it let us off right within walking distance of St. Peter's Basilica!  It was so overwhelming, exciting, and beautiful all at once; it was almost too much to take in!  After that wonderful week when I returned I set down and began to improvise at the piano to see what I might be able to express about the experience.  What came to me almost immediately was the memory of the sound of chant in that great space!  I came up with a very contemporary combination of old and new in a jazz framework.
