By way of introduction of the piece, in 2012, I met my wife, and very early on we had different trips planned. I was going to visit family and Cindy was going back to Paris, a place she had visited many times. So it was that we were almost literally a world apart. Upon both our returns, Cindy shared her many photos of Paris with me, a place I have never been. These photos were but a few that really made an impression on me and made me feel almost as I were there, even though Cindy was there (in one of the most romantic places in the world) as musicians would say, “solo. So the title of this piece suggests a telling of the story in pictures from her perspective.In performing this piece, it is preferable to have a tenor saxophonist who is equally comfortable in an orchestral setting as in a jazz quintet setting. Though all the jazz quintet parts are very specifically written, with either chord voicings and suggested solos, there is room for improvisation in these parts, but using a keen ear and direction to know when to align properly with the orchestra.In my recording of this piece, Maynard Ferguson Band alumni, Andy Weinzler is the featured tenor saxophonist. Many Western New York musicians came together to record this piece, and I thank them all for their incredible musicianship and willingness to perform this piece.

Langey, a cellist, was a German immigrant to America who wrote method books for most of the major instruments. Many young instrumentalists used these books for their first studies including Mr. Sauer who in the foreword of the book describes how the Langey Method was one of his mainstays during his early musical years. I started using this method book at age 14 with my teacher Robert Harper (bass trombonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1943 to 1981) and still refer to it today. The rudiments of music are clearly explained, and the scale and arpeggio exercises are excellent for avoiding the boredom that can sometimes set in with other methods. The short etudes starting on page 42 were some of Mr. Harper’s favorites. With these interesting little pieces, I learned how to play exactly what is on the page. Mr. Harper would stop me multiple times (even within the same measure!) to point out the little things that I had ignored or didn’t play correctly. Without this ability to play what is written, it is impossible to build a musical interpretation later on. In addition to Langey’s own etudes, a selection of etudes by other composers (Vaubaron, Belgke, Dieppo, Manna, Clodomir) plus some solo pieces, round out this wonderful old book. If I were limited to one etude book on the proverbial desert island, this would be it. Ralph Sauer This book of over 120 pages is suitable for performers from beginner right up to advanced. We are pleased to add this valuable book to our Vintage Brass collection.

This setting of the traditional Harvest hymn, We plough the fields and scatter, is written in popular style, a little syncopated. The choir parts are mainly in Unison, with short passages in harmony (SATB). There is also a simple Unison part for the audience/congregation to join in (All good gifts around us), and simple percussion parts could easily be added. The piece could be performed by children or adults, or both together, and though primarily intended for harvest, could fit into any service or concert of thanksgiving. The accompaniment is for piano or organ. (See also arrangement for brass quintet.) [NB If listening to the recording, please note that it repeats more often than it should - but it will give you a good idea of how the piece goes!].
