When a generous donor gave our youth choir a set of handchimes, the first thing Maestro said was You gotta teach them CAROL OF THE BELLS! This choir of 7 or 8 started from scratch in September and has already performed twice in church!  The key for beginners is chords and consistent rhythm. The handbell/handchime part for this beautiful Christmas piece involves either a single note or one chord per measure. We count measures slowly in rehearsal and increase our speed after each time. They catch on very quickly!  The melody is in the flute part, and the whole thing sounds great after just a couple of rehearsals. Permission is granted to make as many copies as necessary for choir and flutist. Key of F, four pages (two for bell choir, two for flutist). Since ability levels vary, tempo and dynamics are left to the discretion of the director. .

Over this foundation, the marimba and violin come and go repetitively. There isn't really an ending; we move towards silence, in fact, it's very Zen. I wrote this piece so that the marimbist passes the rain stick to the violinist at a certain moment, a baton exchange like in a relay race. J'ai construit le début de manière très étalée, très linéaire, avec cette pluie reproduite par le bâton de pluie. Le piano qui fait tourner une basse. Par-dessus cette base, le marimba et le violon viennent et s’en vont de manière répétitive.Il n’y a pas de vraiment de fin, on va vers le silence en fait, c’est très Zen.J'ai écrit cette piece en permettant que le marimbiste transmette au violoniste le baton de pluie a un certain moment, un échange de baton comme dans un relais donc.

Clashing Destinies takes the listener through a spiral into insanity, starting with the constant thudding of the lows. Even as different parts add on, the thudding persists, representing one's inability to think clearly. There is a sharp dissonant line initially played by the glockenspiel that comes up time and time again, representing the internal panic that cuts through one's rational thoughts during their spiral into madness. Finally we hit the breaking point, a moment of silence followed by the screams of pain one experiences after reaching their breaking point. Soon after, a screaming trumpet takes the spotlight, any form of rational thought has now dithered away. Nothing is left but screams. After an intense battle of struggling to find a grasp on reality, there is a moment of calm. Things slow down as it is believed sanity is being regained, but still, there is that persistent thudding and sharp dissonance. Alas, the realization occurs, it is impossible to regain sanity. As the brass section overtakes the calm of the woodwinds, insanity fully takes over. The homestretch of this piece is pure chaos, every motif comes back. It is one huge reprise of all the feelings that have been experienced, except now they are all sounding much more rapidly, all just a small part of the chaos that is ensuing. Now there is nothing left to do except yell for help. There are three final screams, three final pleads for help. After screaming for help, it is realized... No one is there. Now there is nothing, left unresolved, all alone in the silence.

I could write 22 pieces, each a musical rendering of a card.  And, coincidentally, this work will opus 66.For pictorial inspiration, I bought a Pierpont Morgan Library copy of the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards from 15th century Italy. For musical inspiration, I listened to the wonderful salon music of the Polish composer Frederic Chopin, the American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk, and the Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth.The 22 pieces in the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards are: Zero Il Matto The Fool entertains the gathered guests with a tarantella. I. Il Saltimbanco The Mountebank shuffles his cards and does a samba. II. La Papessa The High Priestess concocts a magic potion. III. L'Imperatrice The Empress dances all night. IV. L'Imperatore The Emperor promenades into the Great Hall and inspects the courtiers. V. Il Papa The Pope makes a proclamation that all sinners will be pardoned. VI. L'Amore Love in a tropical paradise. VII. Il Carro Triumphant in battle, the gladiators ride into town on chariots. VIII. La Giustizia Justice is swift and unrelenting. IX. Il Vecchio The Old Man reminisces. X. La Ruota della Fortuna Fortunes rise and fall unpredictably. XI. La Fortezza Strength and fortitude will prevail. XII. Il Penduto Lamentation for the Hanged Man. XIII. Il Morte Death lurks around the corner. XIV. La Temperanza Temperance in A major. XV. Il Diavolo The Devil seduces with his charm and wit. XVI. La Torre The tower topples and crashes onto the populace gathered below. XVII. La Stella Twinkle, twinkle, little star ... XVIII. La Luna Minuet for moonstruck lovers. XIX Il Sole Sunshine, margaritas and salsa cubana. XX Il Giudizio On the Day of Judgment, the angels blow their trumpets ... XXI. Il Mondo The world would be a happier place if we all dance together. Performance option: Shuffle the 22 allegory cards from the Tarot deck to determine the order of performance.
