Jazz Salad began life as a set of piano solos, designed to display various aspects of jazz style to beginning/intermediate level pianists.
 
This version of three of those pieces was orchestrated for West Coast Wind Quintet for performance on their concert series at the Merc in Temecula, California.
 
The three pieces are:

Six Pieces for Woodwind Quintet is an essay in style composition. Each piece represents a different composer, stylistic era, or, in the case of Leaning Down (the most accessible of the set), an American folk music tradition. Total duration is about 10 minutes. TWELFTH NIGHT MUSIC is a concert suite drawn from my incidental music for Shakespeare’s play. 
 
This arrangement for wind quintet was an easy transition from my original instrumentation of flute, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, and trombone; the trumpet part went easily into the oboe, and the trombone was written in about the same range as French horn. 
 
Translating to this more established standard ensemble makes the piece much more accessible to a wider range of musicians worldwide than the fairly unusual instrumentation employed for the original theatrical production.

A musical meditation ...

Originally composed as a solo piano piece, CHORDAL MEMORIES works beautifully as a wind quintet.

It has a serene meditative quality.

The piece is a series of long phrases with jazz-inflected harmonies.

It is not jazz at all, however.
 
The whole unfolds in an organic manner.

         AEROS is a one-movement piece about flying.
 
         The composition begins with Latin dance rhythms and a clearly defined melodic motif. The threads gradually build to a tumble of ecstatic exuberance, engaging but short-lived. The remainder of the piece is a return to the mundane, ultimately settling on a plateau of stability which the listener senses to be merely a steppingstone, a pause before resuming the journey into an uncertain future …
 
         Structurally, the work is a single movement built around an Afro-Cuban montuno pattern, with ostinati divided among the instruments. Stylistically it could be considered as “moody minimalist with a melody�. Or if that is too long and unwieldy, then perhaps just “MMMMUSIC!�
 
         First performance in Laguna Beach, California on September 21st, 2021, by West Coast Wind Quintet, as part of the Sunset Serenades series. The outdoor venue, a small amphitheater in beautiful Heisler Park, high on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, was the perfect aerie from which to bring this piece into the world.

CROOKED LISA – In this lovely quaint, slightly offbeat composition, Beethoven’s most popular piece is mangled practically beyond recognition – and yet the original structure remains miraculously intact. The “jazzy� middle section maintains the key relationship of the original, but it is reimagined in alternately swinging and “straight� phrases with a decidedly bluesy feel.
