This arrangement was created to commemorate both the 50th anniversary of the 1970 Christmas movie musical SCROOGE & the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven.  A more detailed description of this piece & the story & imaginings behind it is included in its covering pages.  However, it may be summarized by its subtitle, What If Liszt Played Beethoven While Scrooge & the Londoners Celebrated?  (Franz Liszt was performing in a European concert tour at the same time that Charles Dickens was writing A Christmas Carol in 1843. Liszt's purpose for the tour was to raise money for constructing a statue of Beethoven in his hometown of Bonn, Germany.)  The piece begins in the key of Bb for the first 3 verses of the song.  The 3rd verse consists of a variation on the melody in the style of Beethoven, perhaps as Liszt might have written & performed it.  The key is raised to C major for the final verse, which includes a few quotes from Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, and concludes with some final lines from his Choral Symphony No. 9 as well as The 5th.  The full time of performance by piano/keyboard, solo voice and/or choir is approximately 4 minutes, which may be shortened & simplified by skipping the 3rd variation verse as indicated.

“For the Fallen� was written for Bec Beall and her choir “Lux Alba� and was premiered by them in 2019 at St Matthew’s Church, Albury, NSW, Australia. The words of this choral suite were written by the English poet Laurence Binyon in 1914, immediately after the Battle of Mons, where the British Expeditionary Force suffered a serious loss, soon after the start of World War I. The fourth verse (“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old�) has become known as the “Ode of Remembrance�, regularly recited at memorial services. This suite uses the words of the Ode for the first movement, with echoes of the bugle call “The Last Post�. The second movement, “They went with songs to the battle� portrays the soldiers as young men in fine fettle, physically and mentally fit for what lies ahead of them. The third movement, “As the stars that shall be bright as we are dust� compares the war dead to stars and constellations. They move “in marches upon the heavenly plain�. Will Longstaff’s painting “Menin Gate at Midnight� (reproduced on the cover of this score) movingly illustrates this concept, with ghostly soldiers marching by the Menin Gate at Ypres, Belgium. The work concludes with an alternate setting of the opening movement “They shall not grow old�. A version of this suite with organ accompaniment is also available on this website.

After being married for several years I realized that I had never written a love song for my wife. So, one day during a lull in guitar lessons I wrote her a song. I truly believe she is the light in my life and that without her my life would be about as interesting as a stone. When I am with her I feel that I can accomplish anything. She inspires me to be better than I am because she is in every way better than I am. She has more patience, kindness, is more caring and less concerned about how others view her than anyone else I know. I'm glad I finally worked up the courage to ask her to marry me. I was afraid to open my mouth and speak what was on my mind. After many months, when I thought I was going to lose her completely, I opened up my feelings to her, and to my great relief she had some of the same feelings that I had. She didn't say yes she would marry me right away, (I had to lock her in a room to get that response) however, over time she did decide of her own free will and choice to marry me. How to teach ragtime piano?  Never let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.  Second Street Rag can be played by an intermediate student who likes rhythm.  The mp3 is recorded at 144 bpm, but Second Street works as slowly as 120.  It's a good introduction for someone wanting to get their rhythm down before exploring Joplin, Lamb, or any of the other classic piano rag composers.  When a strain is repeated, the pianist is encouraged to improvise the strain, much like the last strain is written.  Learning to separate the oom-pah left and the syncopated right is instructive and highly enjoyable.
