Most probably the one for the tenor Nemorino at the beginning of the Second Act that begins with the words “Una furtiva lagrima…” (A stealthy tear…).What you possibly didn’t know is that this very melody was secretly penned by Donizetti in a sketch for piano solo that he treasured hidden in his wallet—folding lines can still be seen on the autograph manuscript in Bergamo. Editor Fabrizio Capitanio is thrilled to present to us this long lost gem in a new, clean, and clearly laid out edition. A detailed introduction tells of how this piece ended up being included in the opera, even if poet and librettist Felice Romani wasn’t so convinced about it.

The entire piece is in a style that I typically don't compose in but I felt the melody had a certain appeal to it. Once the music was completed I began contemplating the goodness of god and what he has done for us. From there I decided the A section would be about his goodness followed by a section which would contain examples of his goodness. All in all I was pleased with the result and the effort I made with the singing. I especially enjoyed writing the flute part being inspired by a friend (Bob) who plays every Sunday at church. The Music A simple ABABA structure with traditional harmony and flute added for the last A section.

He suggested it as a quintet piece (he liked us mostly because we played some of his favorite Dixieland tunes). The result is, well, at least a little bit weird. The original haunting Pat Metheny recording was played on electric sitar, with a high-speed snare drum providing train effect. I wanted to achieve the same thing, so the horns take care of it throughout the piece (with tuba providing it from start to finish). And the song needed a train horn for effect. I wanted to know what chord a train whistle blew, and the Internet told me it was a ninth chord. The vocal part may be sung by a soprano or a tenor. Dramatic interpretation is encouraged and welcome, allowing the artists to share their relationship with clouds.
