The Black Hounds are a nocturnal apparition, and their appearance was regarded as a portent of death. They are supposed to hunt on specific nights in the autumn and winter when it is believed that the howling of these huge dogs foretold death to anyone who heard them. *************************************************About the Composer Laura Olson (ASCAP) is a retired California music educator with over 30 years of experience specializing in stringed instruments and orchestras. She holds a B.A. in Music Education and M.A. in Irish Traditional Music Performance (fiddle, flute, and harp). Her experience as a symphonic musician, ethnic musician, and Film/TV composer led her to combining the three aspects of music into her own compositions and arrangements; storybook music in cinematic style. PLANET ORIGAMI : Is my latest play in the TYNE ONSTAGE series of family orientated musicals and takes the audience ‘Out of this World’ to a strange little planet in a far distant galaxy on a small barren rocky planet called BEEZEDON. This is a place entirely inhabited by a race of androids, who after some catastrophic event, were the only machines immune from the ensuing radiation which destroyed every living life form and fauna. Before leaving for a safer haven, the emigrating intelligencia built a new colony of these ‘droids and programmed them to make their planet beautiful again by carpeting it with new flowers, when it was deemed ‘safe.’ The droids had carried out this programme diligently for the next thousand years. However no one had thought through the consequence of instigating such a rigid programme and when their preliminary attempts ended in failure and the fauna died,these clever machines found a perfect solution by refering to their data banks and manufacturing replicas from synthesised plastic. Once the programme was completed and with no more space left, the ‘droids instantly ‘restored' themselves and began creating their world all over again. This is where my story begins:-     â€˜Melody Mayflower’, Is a newly appointed Earth’s Ambassador and a representative of the Commission for Harmony and Concilliation, an organisation which has been extending its borders throughout the Milky Way Galaxy. Our own star system has become a recent member and Melody is one of their many Goodwill Ambassadors. Although she doesn’t know it, she has been selected for the onerous task of convincing the Droid Nation that their programme is now obselete, as Beezedon is now free of contamination, therefore ready for re-planting with organic material.

The parts have been rehearsed with the appropriate instruments and the ensemble seems to work fantastically.This arrangement aims to act as a short but effective representation of the capabilities of this ensemble. I believe this arrangement adds a sense of intensity which I usually strive for when listening to the arrangement. Notes are added to this arrangement in response to the breif time we had to rehearse this. The trumpet and flute parts work fine, although the double bass part does require a decent amount of virtuosity, for example, when it comes to playing a short solo it is given, and, sometimes, leaps in accompanying parts can be difficult.

It was a softly falling snow, and inspired me to write this piece.Play as smoothly as you can throughout the whole piece. Make sure you count very carefully in measure 21 and 22; the rhythms might surprise you. Also pay close attention to how the music is slurred. When you tongue, do so gently. The more you can help others imagine a quiet day with snow falling slowly and gently, the better. Nowhere in this piece should you play very loudly – even the mezzo forte sections should be on the softer side.Time: ca. 1:30Range: Bb2-C4Key: Bb MajorTime Signature: 4/4I would generally use this piece with a solid first year bassoon student transferring from another instrument, or a second year bassoonist. There are a couple places where flicking up to Bb is advised. Other technical considerations are moving between D and Eb, and F and G. There are also a few rhythmic challenges such as eighth to dotted quarter, and eighth note and two sixteenths.Once the student has purchased this piece, an adjudicator’s copy may be made. Published by Drennan Music Publications (A0.921039). This one was requested by a student a few years ago and it turned into my Concert Band’s favorite piece that year. A few things about this piece. First thing is that I had a large number of solid Alto Saxophone players when I arranged this. So there are two Alto Saxophone parts that are fairly even in skill level.  Second thing is that there are a few punches that I pulled and a few I did not when it comes to simplifying the original piece for beginners. The triplet at the end of the main melody I changed to two eighth notes, and the Clarinets stay under the break. I left the accidentals as is, so there are Câ™­s and a few others that are challenging. The harmonies in the B section of the main melody were left as is, as well as the rhythm in measures 41 to 47.
