However, his body and scope of work extend well beyond the marches which made him so famous. In a rough accounting of Sousa’s body of work, marches make up only the second most numerous of his efforts – some 135 march compositions versus over 320 arrangements and transcriptions for Band. Outside of his marches, most of the Sousa catalog, including his humoresques, remains unpublished and largely unheard today. By way of an old Sousa concert program, we learn the narrative of his humoresque Among My Souvenirs. In it, the Nichols song Among My Souvenirs is lengthened into a sketch. Among his souvenirs is a photograph, letters and a broken heart. As he meditates, he goes back to a time before he was broken-hearted and remembers when he and his beloved were softly singing Twinkling Stars are Laughing, Love. Next, his mind reverts to the time when he was Seeing Her Home, recalling the songs of years gone by at Aunt Dinah’s Quilting Party – he was Seeing Nellie Home. After this, he travels to the Far East, and visions of The Road to Mandalay come to him. From there, he meditates on the Sweet Mysteries of Life and, finally, arrives at the closing picture in which he is once more Among my Souvenirs.

When she gets focused on something, such as a school project, planning the details of a party, or finding a lost book, she sticks to it with intensity until the project is completed or the problem is solved. Like a boomerang, she'll keep coming back to the issue at hand. The repetitive phrases in the first section of this piece remind me of Mason persistently coming to me as a child with a request, not willing to give up until every possibility was exhausted. She was also the child most likely to physically and verbally express affection – when she came home after having been away for a while, she usually greeted me with a hug and told me how much she missed me. Négysey's Gallery (2001) for two violins is based on computer paintings created by the violin virtuoso János Négysey. During a return visit to my Alma Mater, the University of California, San Diego I heard the sounds of a far-off violin and followed them, finding myself in front of the door of János Négysey, the violin professor at the university. We hadn't seen each other in over 20 years. While catching up on our lives since my graduation, János took out several stunning computer paintings he had recently completed. I immediately suggested that I do a new work for two violins based on his art. I asked to see more and soon when I left his office I had a collection of paintings from which to choose. A year later the piece was completed and he programmed it for a recital at the University. They were premiered on April 10, 2001 by János and Päivikki Nykter, also a virtuoso violinist. The images were projected on several screens across the width of the stage. Afterwards, János and I would meet on Skype to keep up to date and there was always a healthy amount of laughter. When he passed away suddenly in 2013 I was shocked and saddened. I still miss his insights, sense of humor and encyclopedic knowledge. The duration is approximately 33 minutes and there are 12 color paintings included with the score. Many thanks to Päivikki for giving me permission to include the paintings.Négyesy's Gallery was premiered by János Négyesy and Päivikki Nykter at the University of California, San Diego on April 10, 2001

When creating this melody, Bjorck imagined himself in the attic of an old house, with afternoon sun drifting through a small window, casting a warm glow on an old steamer trunk like the ones his great-grandparents used when immigrating from Sweden in the late 1800s. Gently lifting out many family heirlooms from the trunk evokes rich memories, providing transportation to much earlier times and places, prompting bittersweet reverie as loved ones now gone are fondly remembered. This composition can prompt a similar nostalgic reverie for those who play it and those who listen.
