French Horn,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1416184 Composed by Robert Schumann. Arranged by Layne Anspach. Classical. Score and part. 62 pages. Songburd Music #997868. Published by Songburd Music (A0.1416184). ROBERT SCHUMANN was a German pianist, music critic and one of the great composers of the Romantic Period who, in an earlier part of his career, was generally critical of the compositional works for piano and voice of his day, and consequently the greater number of his compositions throughout the 1830s were written mostly for piano.  Then came the year of 1840, considered to be Schumann’s liedarjahr (year of song), when he composed nearly half of his life’s best-known works, featuring some of the greatest liederkreis (song cycles) ever written for voice and piano.  One of his widely celebrated song cycles is the well-known Dichterliebe, Op. 48, which is based on a fanciful story of a knight who experiences rejection and love lost, giving us an insight into Schumann’s interests as a ballad writer, melding dramatic irony with his introspective nature and musical style. Schumann’s talent for combining dramatic lyrics with pleasing melodies is clearly seen in the moving lieder (songs) of his repertoire, and his Dichterliebe (A Poet’s Love) is thought to be the paramount work among his song cycles.  Achieved in part by drawing upon the lyric poetry of Heinrich Heine, a German author, poet and literary critic whose political activism among the Junges Deutschland (Young Germans) of the 1830s and 1840s instigated at one point the banning of his works in Germany, leading him to become an expatriate who spent his final years living in Paris, France. Notably, the Romantic Period in Germany is thought to have had its roots in the Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) of the late 1700s and was certainly influenced to some degree by the French Revolution, which contrasted itself to the rationalism of the fading period of the Age of Enlightenment.  Thus, the ideological movement of the Young Germans, and its reactive stance to the Romanticism of the era, adds some contrast to Heine’s lyric poetry, which expressed personal emotions and the irony of love, solidified in his Buch der Lieder (Book of Songs) that was published in 1827. Divided into five sections, Heine’s Book of Songs dealt with issues of unrequited love, romanticism, and introspection, and it was from the more than 60 poems of the lyrical cycle Lyrisches Intermezzo (Lyrical Intermezzo) that Schumann found inspiration for his noteworthy song cycle, selecting 16 of Heine’s lyric poems for his Dichterliebe.  For this arrangement, German lyrics are included to assist the performer in connecting the music to the thoughts, feelings, and specific moments expressed in the words that might otherwise be lost if not aligned with the music.  Noting that changes in mood or tone of the music are better understood when aligned with the words, and by including the lyrics, the performer can phrase a passage while having a guide to see the end of the musical line. Romantic lieder allows for rubato in performance, as playing the piece exactly as written on the page will result in a less inspiring rendition.  To match the horn’s register with the vocal line, the piano part required alterations by moving some notation higher in the register.

Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.828793 Composed by Roger Müller. 20th Century,21st Century,Classical,Halloween. 98 pages. Althorn-music #3370377. Published by althorn-music (A0.828793). According to popular belief, ghosts walk between zero and one o'clock at night - this is the witching hour. This is the darkest hour of the night, when day is particularly distant. In times when people got up at sunrise and went to bed at sunset, everything was usually fast asleep at midnight. It was pitch black and sepulchrally quiet - except for eerie sounds like wind, creaking wood or the rustling of animals. Thus the belief arose: while the day was the time of the living, the dead woke up at night.

Brass Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: A0.1024971 Composed by Simon M. Sperl. Contemporary. Score and parts. 28 pages. Sperl Publishing #3912935. Published by Sperl Publishing (A0.1024971). This piece, Fables, Fiction and Folklore, is built on a mode and musical figure that can be transposed by a tritone while maintaining every note in the scale.  In other words, whether it’s played in G or C#, the exact same notes are used.  This mirroring of the musical figure is meant to symbolize how we see ourselves.  We look in the mirror and see something that may look like us but is, in fact, as far away from reality as possible. We look past all the good and beautiful things in ourselves and our worlds while only seeing our faults and blemishes. On the other hand, when we look at others, we see idealized versions.  We think about them as if they are fictionalized characters in a story.  Let’s focus on the positive when we look at ourselves and our lives and forgive the imperfections.  We’re the heroes of our personal folktale.

Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.511391 Composed by J.S. Bach, Johann Pachelbel. Arranged by Jon Sarta. Baroque,Classical,Wedding. Score. 4 pages. Jon Sarta / MLJ Music #3892581. Published by Jon Sarta / MLJ Music (A0.511391). Jesu Canon is a marriage of Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring and Pachelbel's Canon in D. In almost 30 years of Church Music Ministry, these two songs are among my most requested for weddings. This is a perfect choice for the Processional; the Bridesmaids walk to Jesu and when the Bride enters the most familiar part of the Canon in D is played. Finally, when all are at the altar the song ends with the closing theme of Jesu. The piece is simple and elegant and can easily be mastered by an early intermediate student or sight read for a last minute addition to a wedding. Give it a try, your bride will thank you!

Large Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.553419 Composed by George Frideric Handel. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Christmas,Classical,Sacred,Wedding. Score and parts. 27 pages. RayThompsonMusic #2551253. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553419). Part II of Handel's Messiah closes with the chorus Hallelujah, in the key of D major. In many parts of the world, it is the accepted practice for the audience to stand for this section of the performance. The tradition is said to have originated with the first London performance of Messiah, which was attended by King George II. As the first notes of the triumphant Hallelujah Chorus rang out, the king was so moved that he rose to his feet and remained standing until the end of the chorus. Royal protocol has always dictated that when the monarch stands, everyone in the monarch's presence is also required to stand. Thus, the entire audience and orchestra stood when the king stood during the performance, initiating a tradition that has lasted more than two centuries. My arrangement is for standard wind dectet: 2 fl, 2 oboes,2 clt in A, 2 hns in D and 2 bassoons.

Oboe,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549726 Composed by Gabriel Faure. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Contemporary,Multicultural,Romantic Period,Standards,World. Score and part. 22 pages. Jmsgu3 #3531383. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549726). Duration: ca. 7:00, Score: 12 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano: 7 pages. An epic choice for a recital or funeral.Fauré Background: In the first place, Gabriel Fauré 1845 –1924) was a famous French composer, musician, and educator. Furthermore, his musical ideas influenced numerous 20th-century composers. Therefore, historians regard him as one of the leading French composers of his time. Famous Works: Among his most famous compositions, by and large, are the Pavane, Elegie (op. 24), Requiem, Sicilienne, Nocturnes for piano and the songs Après un rêve and Clair de lune. Inasmuch as his early works are well-known and relatively easy to perform, Faure’s music seems to have become gradually more difficult during his later life. In other words, his later works are somewhat esoteric and complex. Early Home Life: Fauré was in fact born into a well-cultivated family. His aptitude for music became particularly clear early on - when he was still a boy. Under these circumstances, his parents sent him to a music institution in Paris. Consequently, the training he received there prepared him for a career as a church organist and choirmaster. Middle Life: It is important to realize that Fauré studied music composition with the French musical mastermind Camille Saint-Saëns, who became his lifelong friend. Fauré eventually graduated from college and earned a living as an organist and educator. During this period, he had, on the whole, little time to compose. He consequently became more successful in his middle age, becoming organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire. However, he still needed time on balance for composing. Therefore, given these points, he withdrew to the countryside during the summer to focus on composing. Later Life: Fauré was, in the final analysis, recognized in France as the foremost French composer of his time. The French government held a national musical tribute particularly for him in Paris. The French President notably headed the ceremony. Elsewhere, on the contrary, Fauré's music was slow to become accepted, except of course, in England. Legacy: Historians often describe Fauré's music in general as a transition between the end of Romanticism and the beginning of modernism. As an illustration, when Fauré was born, Chopin was still composing. However, by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and atonal music, in particular, had come to fruition. Fauré, by all means, suffered from increasing deafness in his later years. Some musicologists believe this to be indeed the cause of the esoteric nature of Faure’s final works.

Published by Ron Flintjer (A0.1005127).  Bet you never knew the sound of a train whistle was actually a Diminished 7th Chord! Well, it is, as your band will demonstrate clearly when they play the Chugga Chugga Choo Choo! Watch the eyebrows in your audience go up as they, too, realize the musical nature of that train! After four progressively louder and longer blasts from the Chugga Chugga Choo Choo, the band settles into a jaunty melody, replete with your percussion section providing that rhythmic clackety-clack that put so many cross country passengers to sleep in the heyday of train travel. An ascending scale pushes the train to the top of a hill, and a descending scale brings everyone back down to the plains. Finally, the destination is in sight. As the train slows gradually to a stop at the station, your band members vocalize Chugga Chugga Choo Choo Woo Woo in unison, and everyone can disembark. Scored for Elementary Band, be sure to prep your concert-goers with a hearty, All Aboard, when introducing this piece! .

Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.902510 By Stevie Wonder. By Stevie Wonder. Arranged by Steve Burks. Pop,Soul. Score. 7 pages. Steven L. Burks #6249377. Published by Steven L. Burks (A0.902510). This inspirational R&B piece is appropriate for tenors who are comfortable with periodic chest voice above F4, or who are able to mix registers effectively when producing the pitches F#4 and G#4. Its melodic range is from E3 to G#4. You Will Know is a good programming choice when themes of inspiration, encouragement, and spirituality are fitting. Its duration is approximately 3:20, a slight abbreviation of the original recording as ad libs have been omitted. The lyrical content is appropriate for non-adult singers; though post-pubescent singers are more likely to have success performing it due to periodic work above the break. Pedagogically, this piece affords singers an opportunity to work on breath support (due to its periodic long tones), vibrato, and grace notes (which by African American performance practice, occur frequently enough that notating them would have been impractical). In general, ornamentation is a central feature of African American singing, and the best way to absorb this style is to listen to great examples. I am a member of ASCAP. Brass Ensemble Euphonium - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1092452 Composed by Francesco Durante. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Baroque,Instructional,Sacred. Score and parts. 7 pages. Regis Bookshar #696544. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.1092452). Kyrie - by Francesco Durante; Euphonium Quartet – Intermediate – Digital Download. “Kyrieâ€, originally written for a four-part vocal ensemble by Francesco Durante, has now been transcribed, edited and arranged by Regis Bookshar, for a Euphonium Quartet, written in Bass Clef. There is also a version written in Treble Clef, if you would prefer. This would be a welcomed addition to any music library. This short composition, which lasts less than two minutes, will provide many students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long phrases, and to help them to continue to develop good intonation because many of the phrases cadence on a unison note. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (7 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. Francesco Durante was an Italian composer who was born on March 31, 1684 at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Naples. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. A complete collection of Durante’s works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Gaspare Selveggi, a Neapolitan art collector and music theorist, to the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante’s manuscripts. The fact that Durante never composed for the stage brought him an exaggerated reputation as a composer of sacred music. He was considered one of the best church composers of his style and period. In his masses, requiems, litanies and Lamentations, he could provide strong expressive moments, as he does in this “Kyrieâ€. In addition to this arrangement for a Euphonium Quartet, Regis Bookshar has also made other arrangements of this selection. There are Quartets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are being added as often as possible. I’m certain that this beautiful arrangement of Francesco Durante’s “Kyrie†will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

Pure Piano Music by Jeff Bjorck #875215. Published by Pure Piano Music by Jeff Bjorck (A0.1284043). This original solo piano composition by Jeff Bjorck appears on his album/CD, Keepsakes in the Attic. Bjorck notes that, when he created this piece, he visualized an antique music box which--when played--would evoke nostalgic memories of a loving Grandmother playing the box for her grandchildren. The melody is reminiscent of old music box tunes, and it fades slowly as the piece ends, suggesting that the listener leaves the lid open so the echoes and memories can continue on in the listener’s heart.
