Growl is a short, fast-paced piece for solo piano. The piece is cast in a roughly ABA/fast-slow-fast form, and centers around two musical ideas: a driving left-hand ostinato and a 16-bar melodic line. As the piece opens, the ostinato immediately establishes itself, low and menacing, punctuated by snaps and snarls as it races forward. When we first hear the melodic line, it is soft and distant – almost creepy – and it immediately repeats itself, much louder and more violently. After a brief return to the opening of the piece, we have a moment of respite as the ostinato abruptly drops away, and time stands still for a moment before giving way to a peaceful, ethereal version of the melody. But peace doesn’t last long as the melody becomes increasingly dissonant and violent, culminating in a brutal, crashing cacophony that surges into a triumphal climax. As the grand chords ebb away, the ostinato begins to quietly re-insinuate itself back into the fabric of the piece, building slowly to a return to the opening material and a screaming version of the melodic line. Suddenly, the triumphal chords come thundering back, warring with the ostinato – each interrupting the other, clashing to a frenzied, crashing end. Duration: ca. 5 min. It has an ABAC structure and was originally written in the key of B-flat major.The melody combines the music's contradictory possibilities. The downward thrusts of the opening phrases suggest emotional despair, while the final line, with its repeated high notes, sounds almost jubilant. It usually runs in an average time.All of Me first came to public notice when a performance by Belle Baker was broadcast on the radio in 1931. After that a few others also became successful.Frank Sinatra recorded several versions of All of Me. Its 1948 release peaked at No. 21. He also sang it in the film Meet Danny Wilson, which may have helped Johnnie Ray's performance reach No. 12 in the charts that year. Sinatra's use of All of Me brought a non-jazz audience to the song, as did Willie Nelson, whose version was included on his Stardust album and reached No. 3 on the Hot Country Songs chart in 1978. I wanted this piece to convey the feeling of the shared warmth of having family and friends meeting over the festive season when everything is done, and now it’s time to enjoy! Written in Concert E flat major the introduction begins with a bell- like Christmas chime settling into the main theme which is almost like a verse and chorus. The piece has two of these sections with a link between the two. The second section is a different treatment to the first as some of the bell like figurations of the opening are incorporated. There is also a mix of staccato and legato phrasing to give contrast. The Chorus part is repeated before a short quiet reflective ending. The range is two octaves at most and there is nothing more complicated than an eighth note- hence it has been set in early intermediate level. The idea of travelling auf der Walz was also taken up in Australia (where they called it on the Waltz or on the Wallaby) and it gave rise to the famous song Waltzing Matilda, although in the Ozzie song the traveller was a swagman rather than a craftsman. Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.·     Choose a tempo.·     Choose a dynamic.·     Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

It was first released on a charity album and included female backing vocals and a children’s choir. A pared back version was then released on the Beatles Let It Be album. I was inspired by but too late for the Space and Time themed RMIT Music concert, which happened to be on John Lennon’s birthday, and arranged the song for SAA voices, with the melody in an alto-friendly key, matching the CORP attendees at the time. The melody is faithful to the original recording, adds an accompanying “wah-wah� in the second verse, suggestive of the trippy guitar effect, and reinstates the female backing vocals in the third verse.
