String Ensemble,String Trio - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.749756 Composed by J. Webster. Arranged by Stephen M. Taylor. Folk,Gospel,Holiday,Sacred,Traditional. Score and parts. 7 pages. SMT Music #5994839. Published by SMT Music (A0.749756). Joseph Webster penned this hymn with help of S. Fillmore Bennett back in 1868. Webster was feeling depressed and when his friend asked him what was the matter he replied, It's no matter, it will be all right by and by. With that Bennett started jotting down lyrics and Webster took to his fiddle and the song was written in about 30 min. It became a staple in the protestant hymnody and has been recorded by many country and gospel artists over the years. This is a simple arrangement for string trio with sort of theme and variations in the accompaniment.  .

Although it is often associated with the Catholic prayer, Schubert's music is actually an adaptation of a work by Walter Scott, a Scottish poet. Schubert composed the melody as part of his piece Ellens Gesang III (Ellen's Song III), which is a series of songs based on Scott's poems.Ave Maria was composed in 1825 and is one of the most popular and beloved pieces in the classical repertoire. The gentle and melancholic melody, combined with the Latin lyrics invoking the Virgin Mary, evokes a sense of serenity and devotion. While it was originally written for voice and piano, the melody has also been adapted for various instruments and choirs.Interestingly, Schubert was unaware that his melody would become widely known as Ave Maria. The original title of the composition is Ellens Gesang III: Hymne an die Jungfrau (Ellen's Song III: Hymn to the Virgin). The fame of Ave Maria came later when different versions of the melody were published and performed with the Latin lyrics.Due to its beauty and emotional appeal, Schubert's Ave Maria has been performed on numerous occasions, from religious ceremonies to concerts and solemn events. The piece continues to move and inspire listeners around the world, highlighting Franz Schubert's genius as a composer.

Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.971691 Composed by Michael E. Ropp. 20th Century. Score and parts. 8 pages. Michael E. Ropp #2034341. Published by Michael E. Ropp (A0.971691). Brass Postlude 2 was designed to be used on those Sunday mornings when a brass quintet is available for the choir anthem, and it is desired to make maximum use of the quintet. There is a corresponding Brass Prelude 2 that goes with it. Brass Prelude 2 is, in a word, wild; it is very modern in style, very fast, and quite short, and is specifically designed to end the service with a bang, sending the worshipers out on an uplifting note. This piece requires an advanced quintet because of the tonal structures, speed, and the requirement for a piccolo trumpet in A.

Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549857 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Easter,Sacred,Wedding. 17 pages. Jmsgu3 #3556935. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549857). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140.  Program this for church services during Easter or as a recital encore. Also great for Weddings. Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – like the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the guards singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears; it catches the listener off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First, Johann Sebastian Bach may be the greatest composer in music history. Indeed, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. People are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. His most famous vocal works seem to include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most notable are the St. John Passion and, indeed, the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and, above all, composers. Consequently, he first of all pursued a career as a church organist. As a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. He worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen for a while. Here, he probably developed his organ style and, likewise, his chamber music style. Eventually, he gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here, he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his unique style. This new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival               Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach's works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.

Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1460862 By Ost (original Soundtrack). By Charles Bernstein. Arranged by Patrick Jillett. 20th Century,Contemporary,Film/TV,Halloween,Holiday. 35 pages. Patrick Jillett #1039765. Published by Patrick Jillett (A0.1460862). A Haunting Ode to Terror: The Theme from A Nightmare on Elm Street”The iconic theme from A Nightmare on Elm Street, composed by Charles Bernstein, is a masterclass in building tension and suspense. This eerie melody has become synonymous with the horror genre and the terror that Freddy Krueger embodies. The moment the notes begin to play, you know you're in for a ride into your nightmares. The theme's foundation is a slow, pulsing rhythm that conjures an unsettling sense of unease. As the melody unfolds, it becomes increasingly dissonant and unsettling, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that's both mesmerizing and terrifying. The way the texture weaves together creates a sense of chaos and disorder. It’s an audible representation of the chaos and panic that ensues when Freddy invades your dreams. The notes seem to shatter and reform into a soundscape of terror. This theme has become an integral part of horror movie history, evoking fear and dread in listeners worldwide. It's a testament to Bernstein's mastery of atmosphere and tension that this music can still send shivers down your spine even decades after its release.Rating: 9/10 - A must-listen for horror fans and anyone who loves a good scare!

Barabba and Annie Jankowski after The Wolf and the Lamb by Aesop for Soprano, Baritone, Flute, Violin, Viola and CelloIt feels like our national political and social discourse has plummeted to new depths of dysfunction. No matter what your opinions are, you cannot fail to notice that we’ve lost something in our nation when our leaders cannot find a way to disagree with one another with civility. It is hard to feel optimistic, or even know what to do in the face of such petty ugliness that passes for political thought in this nation. For Tyrant I turned to the basic lessons found in Aesop’s fables, which are at heart lessons on being a good member of civil society…lessons that unfortunately I believe our nation needs to re-learn. Soon. The Wolf and the Lamb focuses on someone who consciously makes up lies to justify what he wants to do and feels alarmingly relevant today. Only lightly edited to turn the story into a dramatic scene, it is a very old story intended for the people of 2017.

String Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: A0.837263 Composed by Garth M. Williams. Folk,Standards. Score and parts. 16 pages. Garth M. Williams (Socan) #3096753. Published by Garth M. Williams (Socan) (A0.837263). A Winter's Lament was written during our western Canada winter of 2015.  Although it tends to be a hospitable climate, it also tends, at times to be very grey and wet during the winter months.  With that in mind, I wrote this fiddle ballad which records, in  the opening, my thoughts about the bright, warm spring months to come.  The middle section tends to be somewhat melancholic about the greyness of our winter, but it, in turn, is followed by a recap of what we can look forward to when winter actually departs and spring sunshine returns.  This orchestral composition gives the violins, violas and celli and opportunity to express the melody.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1221432 By Stan Kenton & His Orchestra. By L. Wolfe Gilbert, Marion Sunshine, and Moises Simons. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Jazz,Latin,Multicultural,Pop,World. 39 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #817754. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1221432). Can a brass quintet sound like Stan Kenton’s 19-piece big band? No, not really:  no saxophones, no rhythm section, no Milt Bernhart, no Maynard Ferguson, no Bill Russo, no Conte Candoli, no . . .   Well, you get the picture.  But five brass instruments can play in the Kenton style.  And that’s what this is:  “The Peanut Vendor†in the style of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.      Moisés Simons’ “El Manisero†(“The Peanut Vendorâ€) was first recorded in the late 1920s.  The melody was relatively simple yet exotic sounding; the lyrics, a Cuban street vendor’s pitch for selling his bags of peanuts.  Consumers bought more than a million copies of the sheet music, and the song supposedly led to a “rumba craze†in the U.S. and Europe (although the song is not really a rumba!).       Don Azpiazú and his Havana Casino Orchestra recorded the song for RCA Victor in 1930 with Antonio Machín on the vocal; its sales may well have been more than the million-plus sheet music copies sold.       English lyrics were added by L. Wolfe Gilbert and Marion Sunshine and the song became “The Peanut Vendor.† One estimate is that nearly 200 recordings have been made.  That’s a lot of peanuts.      Stan Kenton revived “The Peanut Vendor†in 1947 when he first recorded it for Capitol Records.  His version was completely instrumental.  Rhythm and saxophones opened the number and established the background; later the trombone section added emphasis.  A trombone solo first stated the melody but eventually the five-person trumpet section took over with what one writer referred to as “shrieking dissonances.† “The Peanut Vendor†subsequently became one of Kenton’s most requested numbers and he recorded it at least three more times.     This brass quintet arrangement, of course, has access to only two trumpets.  So the good news is that all five players get a chance with the melody.  Kenton’s extended opening trombone solo is shared by Trombone and Tuba.  The “shrieking dissonances†are performed not only by Trumpets but also by Horn in F and Trombone.  The bad news is that all five players have to take a turn with the continuing rhythmic background melody.  Written in 4/4 time, the suggested tempo is 184 BPM in a Latin style.  Kenton’s version is in B-flat major; this arrangement lowers it to A-flat major so that most notes are within the normal playing range of the instruments.  (Don’t worry; the “shrieking dissonances†are still there!)       Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 37 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.  (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.).

Small Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.784334 Composed by Joshua Hauser. Instructional. Score and parts. 38 pages. Slide Ride #5288661. Published by Slide Ride (A0.784334). 1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake! The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent. As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.·     Choose a tempo.·     Choose a dynamic.·     Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes. The variations are endless! If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys. All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!
