The grandeur and vastness felt in the Rocky Mountains naturally evokes a sense of greatness and awe for nature. In late July 2024, when I was composing this music, smoke from the Jasper wildfires was carried by the wind to Calgary, more than 300 km away, and it seemed as if the entire city was covered in fog. It seems that even the huge wildfires are an irresistible force of nature that cannot be controlled by human power. I am delighted to leave a “Serenade for Strings” titled “Rocky” in history. The first movement is composed in the traditional sonata form with the theme of “Brilliant Rocky,” and progresses with two contrasting themes: a lively first theme and a beautiful one. The second movement is composed with the title of “Magnificent Rocky,” and expresses the beautiful and majestic scenery of the Rockies. The third movement is developed under the theme of “Memories and Reminiscences of Rocky,” and overall, it expresses the process of climbing and descending to the top of Rocky and the excitement of the heart. The short episodes that unfold between the themes express various scenes of Rocky, and the technique of expanding and contracting notes is used to express tension, vitality, and an atmosphere of passion. The rising and falling musical figures visually and symbolically express the shapes of high mountains and the foothills.

Variations on a Shaker Tune was commissioned by Mark Ludwig for his educational series in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. When he approached me about writing a theme and variations work for the purpose of illustrating musical form, texture and orchestration to a young audience, I thought what better thing to do than to use as a theme a Shaker hymn from nearby Hancock Shaker Village. As it turns out Deborah Leath Rentz, a mezzo-soprano who is Mark's assistant at the Terezin Music Foundation, has been researching and transcribing a Shaker Hymnal, ca. 1850, created and compiled at the Hancock Shaker Village. (Deborah's project is sponsored by the Hancock Shaker Village and the Richmond Performing Series.) So I asked her to put on DAT tape a number of these hymns for me. I immediately fell in love with the very first one on the tape: Grateful Remembrance. It had a soulful, melancholic core; an almost bluesy feeling to it. In this performance, Deborah will sing the hymn a cappella in the beginning. Then, seven variations will follow. I. Grateful Remembrance An instrumental version of the hymn. II. Grateful Chanting Featuring the B-flat clarinet in a pentatonic chant setting. III. Grateful Funk The bluesiness of the hymn is transformed into a funk riff. IV. Tango Remembered A four-note fragment from the hymn is transformed into a sultry tango. V. Sambinha agradecida The yearning flat 6th in the hymn is transformed into a samba Carmen Miranda would've loved. VI. Canonized Remembrance The hymn is treated to a canonic transfiguration. VII. Grateful Groove The pentatonic nature of the hymn is spun out in an Afro-cuban razzle dazzle finale!!! Enjoy!!!

This is a LARGE PRINT EDITION of JVKE's GOLDEN HOUR transcribed in the key of C for easier playing/reading for the piano.  It is slightly simplified, and most likely suited for an intermediate pianist to early advanced pianist.  Most pianists find this piece easier to read and play in the key of C, rather than the original key of E, which has 4 sharps in the key signature.  Because the notes have all been enlarged for easier reading, this arrangement is long.  It is 20 pages long due to the enlarged printing of the notes.  This LARGE PRINT FORMAT assists low vision musicians and beginner pianists, or anyone who simply finds music easier to read when the notes are bigger. This is a lovely song by JVKE - and would be a beautiful addition to any repertoire.  It is an impressive piano recital piece!

I got the idea for the piece after having composed for 2 hours and finding my stomach screaming from hunger, my throat screaming from thirst, my head screaming from fatigue, and my mind screaming from unsatisfied work. It was a very overwhelming feeling at once and caused me to come up with the idea for the piece and subject for the fugue. The prelude is supposed to be setting up the fugue, as it depicts multiple voices getting along but just barely. The C major section shows the initial clarity from satisfying one of their needs, but it quickly returns to a struggle. The fugue slowly and slowly gets more intense, leading up until the end when the main character becomes completely overwhelmed.

Known mainly these day for the wonderful 'Scherzo' from his Symphony No.4 in D Minor, during a colourful lifetime, Henry Litolff wrote many virtuosic compositions, indeed he was feted by many of his contemporary peers. Liszt himself in fact dedicated his first piano concerto to Litolff. Les Octaves is a bravura work typical of Litolff's style, this arrangement brings many technical challenges for the five players to 'get their teeth into', not least of course that it is scored for Eb, Bb, A, Basset Horn and Bass Clarinet! Uncomprimising from the start, well actually when I come to think about it, it does not let up until the final pause! This is the first step in uniting the digital and woodwind elements, as the same breath which animates the clarinet also activates the electronics.From this most fundamental element, the breath becomes a single sustained note from which the computer will generate all of its subsequent tones. Thumbs Up for Ice Cream! is a fun exercise for students to use to learn to differentiate between using the Treble Clef Thumb and the Bass Clef Thumb for Middle C.  The entire song is written on Middle C, using half notes and quarter notes.  When I teach this song, I make it into a game with my students.  On half notes they say ice cream to feel the 2 beats and on quarter notes they say scoop.  Once they master the song using the correct rhythm words and thumbs, they then have to challenge the members of their family to do it.  The kids love getting their family members and sometimes even their friends to do it.  This is a simple song, but packed full of fun!
