This song pays homage to “Honey Bun� from the classic 1949 Rodgers & Hammerstein musical: South Pacific. Like its forerunner, “The Sharpest Smile� represents a “show within a show� moment. Both “Honey Bun� and “The Sharpest Smile� derive their comedy from the age-old, vaudevillian gimmick of a girl pretending to be a boy and vice versa. In the context of the Love Birds script, “Vera� (a female parrot) is costumed as a 1920s (male) gangster talking to “his� gangster friends. “The Gangster� character explains that “he� has met a wonderful girl (named “Pearl�), so don’t expect to see “him� around as much; or lyrics to that effect. Later in the number, we learn that “Pearl� is in fact a hungry crocodile dressed in a lady’s bikini costume (i.e. two coconuts strung together for the top – also an homage to “Honey Bun�). Pearl constantly tries to take a bite out of the Gangster Parrot who is blissfully unaware of the threat. This is a comedy song about mismatched relationships, but it also serves as meta-commentary on the dangers that pursuing such relationships can pose. In other words, “Pearl� is “Peril� (at least according to the thinking of the time). Despite the implicit risk, this unconventional love story seems to work out in the end. Next, the diminished chords and misaligned text paint a picture of a disenfranchised group, together longing for the same relief. In a frenzied turnaround, the music climbs to a diatonic apex, immediately drifting back to the familiar tonality of the top of the piece, and closing with a dark, mistrusting 'Amen'. Take time with the fermatas and ritards, and really lean into the dynamics of this short, dramatic composition. - Zach WellsZach Wells lives in Dallas, Texas, where he is an Associate Director of Music at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church. During the production of his opera Lucio Silla which was being performed there in the Teatro Regio Ducale. It was written for the castrato Venanzio Rauzzini, who had sung the part of the primo uomo Cecilio in Lucio Silla the previous year. While waiting for the end of the run (from 26 December 1772 to 25 January 1773), Mozart composed the motet for his singer, whose technical excellence he admired. Its first performance took place at the Theatine Church on 17 January 1773, while Rauzzini was still singing in Mozart's opera at night. Mozart made some revisions around 1780. On 30 May 1779, a Trinity Sunday, a revised version was performed by Francesco Ceccarelli at the Holy Trinity Church, Salzburg. Another revised version was intended for Christmas. The manuscripts of the two Salzburg versions were discovered in 1978 in St. Jakob, Wasserburg am Inn. In modern times, the motet is usually sung by a female soprano.I was tempted to combine the soprano and a brass quintet. We have performed this arrangement quite successfully at many venues, including a national music festival (Wakkerstroom, South Africa, March 2023).

Silent Night for piano quartet. The final verse features a surprise re-harmonization of the melody.  Origins Father Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics for a new Christmas Carol. He wanted the new carol for his Christmas Eve Mass. With only a couple of hours until the service, He asked organist and schoolteacher Franz Gruber to write a melody and simple accompaniment to accompany the lyrics. The result is probably the most famous Christmas carols – Silent Night. First Performance Perhaps because the organ was undergoing repairs or to ensure the accompaniment was easy enough, Mohr asked Gruber to write it for the guitar. Mohr played the guitar, and Mohr and Gruber gave the world premiere performance at the Christmas Eve Mass in 1818 at St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf in Salzburg. Original Score Eventually, the original score became lost, and Mohr's name was largely forgotten.  Though the public initially recognized Gruber as the composer, many people began rumors that a more famous composer was responsible over time. Thus, they floated the names of Haydn, Mozart, and even Beethoven. Authorities eventually settled the matter when a manuscript in Mohr’s handwriting turned up in 1820. Consequently, we learn that Mohr wrote the lyrics in 1816, and Gruber composed the melody in 1818. Popularity Nonetheless, Silent Night is still very popular. Singers have performed this song in nearly every genre and multiple languages. Perhaps the most famous version is the one Bing Crosby crafted. This version is the third best-selling physical single recording in the history of recorded music. This recording was released in 1935 and sold at least 30 million copies. Only two songs have ever sold more. Elton John released Candle in the Wind 1997 and sold 33 million copies. The record for most copies ever sold goes to Bing Crosby. He released White Christmas in 1942 and sold 50 million physical copies.
