The concert was a Mothers’ Day event, sponsored by a couple of local boutique chocolatiers, so the works on the program were all chocolate and coffee themed, including J S Bach’s Coffee Cantata and a bunch of songs from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The festival’s Artistic Director Roland Peelman asked me if I could write a new piece on this theme.So I got thinking about chocolate and about Mothers’ Day and about how when you’re a little kid and have no earnings, you still give your mum a present for her special day (that is, your dad pays for it and you sign the card!). And if it’s chocolate, you might give her ​your​ favourite chocolate instead of ​hers,​ and all you are really waiting for is for her to offer you one. When I was a child, I always used to think of chocolate boxes as treasure chests, full of shining precious things only consumed on very special occasions. Your audiences will love the melody and harmonies. This arrangement by Donald A. Mills is for barbershop as a quartet or chorus. It is TTBB (TLBB) a cappella, sung softly, sweetly, legato, singing the four dotted quarter notes as a 3/4 time. The Beach Boys have mentioned that they wrote In My Room in 12/8 time because they had tired of the 3/4 time many songs of the day were written in. From Wikipedia, Gary Usher explained that 'In My Room found us taking our craft a little more seriously. Brian and I came back to the house one night after playing 'over-the-line' (a baseball game). I played bass and Brian was on organ. The song was written in an hour... Brian's melody all the way. The sensitivity... the concept meant a lot to him. When we finished, it was late, after our midnight curfew. In fact, Murry [the Wilson brothers' father] came in a couple of times and wanted me to leave. Anyway, we got Audree [the Wilson brothers' mother], who was putting her hair up before bed, and we played it for her. She said, 'That's the most beautiful song you've ever written.' Murry said, 'Not bad, Usher, not bad,' which was the nicest thing he ever said to me. Gary Usher (who co-wrote the lyrics with Brian Wilson) further describes that Brian was always saying that his room was his whole world. Brian seconds this opinion: I had a room, and I thought of it as my kingdom. And I wrote that song, very definitely, that you're not afraid when you're in your room. It's absolutely true. In 1990, Brian wrote, I also enjoyed producing 'In My Room'. There is a story behind this song. When Dennis, Carl and I lived in Hawthorne as kids, we all slept in the same room. One night I sang the song 'Ivory Tower' to them and they liked it. Then a couple of weeks later, I proceeded to teach them both how to sing the harmony parts to it. It took them a little while, but they finally learned it. We then sang this song night after night. It brought peace to us. When we recorded 'In My Room', there was just Dennis, Carl and me on the first verse...and we sounded just like we did in our bedroom all those nights. This story has more meaning than ever since Dennis' death.

I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going ? (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet.  Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this.  Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. ?  Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. ? As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. But I also had a number of players who could move faster and play more challenging rhythms and notes than others. What to do? How about a simple arrangement with flexible part assignments?JINGLE THOSE BELLS! is a super-easy setting of Jingle Bells. The work opens with the traditional unison rendition of the melody, as found in almost every beginner band method book ever written. But then, after a brief pause, the melody is repeated, but now faster and with the addition of a bass line and rhythmic accompaniment. The rhythmic accompaniment is provided by several of your best clarinet, sax, and trumpet players who play the Advanced Part. And if you are short on bass voice instruments, you can utilize the optional bass parts for Alto Sax. Super flexible and a bit humorous, it takes a little score study to realize how adaptable this piece is.
