The hornpipe is a traditional dance in Ireland and Scotland. The legend says that sailors used to dance the hornpipe before setting sail. It makes sense that they would dance atop bar tables until their legs gave out: after all, on each journey they put their lives at risk. Dancing is a way to face one’s fears and find the happiness that lies within. It is a way to find hope amidst uncertainty.
We should dance when we are happy, so we can be happier. We should dance when we are sad, so our sadness can be soothed. We should dance like our sailor ancestors once did, so that we can know that even though the journey might be dangerous, if we are tired from dancing, nothing can go wrong.

The Circus Cavalry embodies the style of marches and descriptive light-music similar to Leroy Anderson. The Circus Cavalry follows the form of traditional marches, but ends with a descriptive coda in the original key.  Listeners can imagine the opening parade of performers, clowns, and animals under the big top circus tent.  After the main performance is finished, the coda portrays the clowns’ prolonged merriment, which results in a whip crack from the ringmaster to keep the show on schedule.  The Circus Cavalry is perfect for any circus, carnival, or children’s themed band concert!

But there are other types of changes which are fully up to us and that is what this song is about.
There are times when we decide to make personal changes in order to go on a new journey and reimagine our heaven. A new heaven which will give us the strength and the courage to fight our fears and our demons. When we change our destiny and fight despite all setbacks, we become the warriors of our own battles.

This arrangement of Railway Song is one of a series of jolly and descriptive quartets (and a septet) all based on the Swabian folksong Auf de schwäb'sche Eisebahne (= on the Swabian railway) from the Tübinger Kommersbuch 1853 The music in this arrangement also mimics the speeding up and slowing down of the train and its whistles. Full Orchestral Score. Marches is the 2nd movement to the 1st symphony.   In contrast to the more sublime Ruhevoll (and the 4th movement Molto Adagio) Marches utilizes many aspects of the march in various settings, from large brass and woodwind circus venues to trios of soloists, while also encompassing the somber funeral procession. Marches opens the brass and low strings in a dogfight; the brass fire short staccato blasts as 'cellos and basses answer with long lyrical lines setting the pace until the cat and mouse game ends with the low strings driving their way to the trio. When the three soloists finish their introductory theme they are answered by the full orchestra taking the theme and surrounding it with all the boisterous bells and whistles of a circus march! But the reality is that marches are - at their core - war music, and the waste that war causes has to be addressed in the funeral march. These themes are all cycled through once again, with a coda that cleverly ties things up.

Here's another piece for a student. She likes improvising and composing with ostinato patterns and minimalism-type stuff, so I included repeating broken 3rds throughout the piece. She also asked for the hustle and bustle of downtown, so I tried to express that through honking horns and other sudden accented sounds caused by delivery trucks, subway, police whistles, etc. I wrote it in 5/4 because she wanted more of a challenge than in previous pieces and I mixed in a little Mixolydian and Aeolian into the melody. Down By The Sally Gardens is an Irish folk song with traditional Celtic roots. The song is a slow and gentle ballad, with a mournful melody that evokes a sense of nostalgia and longing. The lyrics speak of a man's deep love for a woman, and his sorrow that they must part. The music is mostly played with a combination of traditional Irish instruments such as fiddle, whistles, and accordion, which adds to the nostalgic, wistful feeling of the song.
