Set for 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 B-flat clarinet, 1 bassoon, and piano, Yuan-Chen Li's 8-minute long wind and piano quinetet Butterfly was commissioned by Norfolk Chamber Music Festival (Norfolk Connecticut, 2007) of Yale University School of Music, and premiered by the parcipant musicians of the workshop, and subsquently received its New York premiere in IMANI Winds' summer chamber music festival (2012). In the first and second movements, the music emulates the movement of butterfly’s flying and the delightful spirit of the spring time. The last movement lends itself to a poetic moment, evoking the sense of the transformation of butterfly’s life and its beautifulness. Musicians would be surprised by the intricate rhythms, unpredictable move across the mode, whistletone, and witty interaction among performing partners.

This beautiful Celtic-style song from Shawn Mendes' album, Handwritten is given new life in this accessible arrangement for 3-part mixed choir, piano and optional acoustic guitar. Everyone gets to sing at least part of the melody at some point. Vocal ranges: Part I (Bb3-Eb5), Part II (Bb3-A4), Part III (F3-Eb4). The whistling sections may be sung on an oo and/or whistled by some singers. There are 4 solo options: two for Part I or II, and two for Part III. This arrangement works beautifully for middle school and 9th or 10th grade high school ensembles. Part III is especially appropriate for boys' changing voices. An acoustic guitar chart (with melody line, lyrics and chords) is also included, and may be used to add more authenticity to the performance.  Anthony Giamanco is a member of ASCAP. Rossini in the Kitchen (2005) is a comic staged monodrama for tenor and piano. It was
composed for and is dedicated to Frank Napolitano.
The work imagines the Italian composer Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) in his later years in
Paris. After his rather young retirement at age 37, Rossini wrote no more opera and instead
led a life of leisure and luxury, pursuing his great love of gourmet cooking.
Although Rossini was from the northernmost regions of Italy, known for their elegant Frenchinfluenced
cuisine, the recipes in this work are familiar Tuscan style Italian fare. It is
assumed that Rossini would perhaps have enjoyed these dishes as well and made them as a
nod to his native country, whose national musical style he had so impacted with his
compositional work.
The musical language of this work is ecletic, drawing upon the common practice language of
Rossini's time, distorted and amplified through more contemporary sounds and textures.
Some of the contemporary sounds and textures are derived from popular music traditions of
the second half of the 20th century. Since, like more modern popular music, Rossini's own
work was some of the most popular and widely known music of its time. His tunes were
whistled by people in the streets, in the same way that today's pop songs are.
Thus, the musical language of the work sometimes switches abruptly or transforms from one
style into another. There are numerous allusions to Rossini's own music as well as that of
other later opera composers who were indebted to him.

Performance Suggestions: With a capable choir this could/should be performed a capella with interludes by a button accordion.
