Of the 4 surviving settings of the Te Deum by Charpentier, the present one composed in the 'joyeux et très guerrier' key of D major, is undoubtedly his most famous work, thanks to television producers who chose its opening prelude to be the Eurovision signature tune in the early 1950s. Although Charpentier's Parisian career is quite well documented, little is known about the genesis and first performance of the Te Deum but it has been suggested that it may have been performed during the celebrations of the military victory of Steinkerque (3 August 1692). Written by Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) and titled “The Lord Shall Give His People the Blessing of Peace,” the text of “O God of Love, Give Peace Again” was published in the 1861 edition of the landmark English hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Baker, who is perhaps best remembered for his hymn “The King of Love My Shepherd Is,” was chairman of the committee that prepared that hymnal. Because war is a constant in the world, Baker's text is always relevant. Stanza 1 is an entreaty that God would “make wars throughout the world to cease.” Stanza 2 asks that God recall his “works of old,” for only by God's hand can peace be given again. Stanza 3 extends this thought by asking “Whom shall we trust but thee, O Lord? My “fall leaf� traces Gideon Klein’s lifeline, which was shortened by unspeakable violence; starting at Přerov, the place of his birth, continuing via Prague to Therienstadt and ending in Auschwitz-Fürstengrube. A procession is led (often by two children) through the town to find a house where Mary and Joseph might be welcome. A setting of Adoro te Devote is found in the midst of this piece evoking the reverence of the community around the manger bearing the Christ Child.
