Choral Choir (SATB divisi) - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.841250

Composed by Chris Gordon. Contemporary. Octavo. 18 pages. Cool Wind Music Digital #3029087. Published by Cool Wind Music Digital (A0.841250).

A setting of a very powerful poem by English poet, Ted Hughes, about the onset of autumn in an English (Yorkshire) garden and the surrounding countryside.  It is full of pathos and passion, harmony and dissonance, chaos and peace - just like English weather!

This is a very individual and innovative choral setting of Hughes' poem which is, itself, rich in 'meaty' metaphor and colour - and the composer is a vegetarian! It evokes a savage Nature within a savage landscape where humans and animals compete for space and for food. It is October, the fields and woods and gardens of rural Yorkshire are readying themselves for the cold and desolation (and despair) of winter which isn't far away in time. 'A glass, half-filled with wine, left out(side) To the dark heaven all night, by dawn Has dreamed a premonition of ice across its eye as if the ice-age had begun its heave.'   That is only two and a half stanzas but you see from these lines that there are veiled threats of (Nature's) violence in the heavy tread of the poet's slowly-building angst over what is happening in the surrounding countryside - and his fear grows, and his awe grows, with every line. There is even fear underlining the very last line: 'And now it is about to start.' Winter is creeping closer and closer towards the house and it will not be pleasant to experience!

I have tried to instil a little of this in the music which keeps skidding from consonance to dissonance and back to consonance. Sometimes the dissonance piles up, like snow driven by the wind piles up into deep banks; sometimes the music relaxes into stillness and calm (painted in tonal music) like a crisp, mild late autumn or early winter's day when the sun warms the landscape and life appears bearable, tolerable. I hope this adds to the song's 'charm'. It wasn't easy to write: sometimes the right music was elusive. The music ends with the word 'October' repeated three times, with voices overlapping in a little canon. This conjures up the wistful feelings of the poet as he looks out onto a peaceful scene, soon to be filled with all manner of 'natural violence', while his inner peace will soon be shattered by the mayhem about to be unleashed around him.

Setting Ted Hughes is no easy task. It is for choirs and choirmasters to judge if I have succeeded in conveying the 'sense and sensibility' of a classic 20th century English poem.

Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 71 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3038887. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533698).

Shining Space: Quintet for Horn and Strings (2006) was commissioned by and is dedicated
to Hazel Dean Davis and Stephen Hackbarth on the occasion of their marriage, June 24, 2006.
The work was premiered by James Sommerville, horn with Sarah Kapustin and Francesca
Anderegg, violins, Nathan Burke, viola, and Peter Lorenzo Anderegg, cello.
The basic musical material for the work is a set of intervals which is gradually “expanded
outward†– moving from close dissonance to luminous consonance. This could be seen to
represent a sense of freedom, growth, and a bright future.
The first movement, Bright Morning Sky, begins vibrantly with ecstatic ringing in the higher
strings. The cello presents the work’s basic pitch material in dramatic gestures. The horn
then enters: first abortively and then affirmatively – changing the texture to focus on itself.
The horn continues lyrical melodic development while the strings react, dissipating their
initial energy. Nervous tremolos in the strings start to build back energy again, leading to a
wild climax. The music then relaxes into the next section marked “Slow, suspended.†The
horn and strings interact melodically, supported by luminous harmonies. The nervous
tremolos return, regaining energy towards the coda. The work ends with the ecstatic ringing
of the opening – but, this time, the harmonic material is open and bright.
The second movement, I Am the Vine, is serene and expressive – consisting of a series of
canons which develop, break-off, and start again. The canons are almost always in two
voices – representing two lives intertwining.
The third movement, Chasing Windflower, returns to the energy of the opening movement.
However, the harmonic language begins this time with the open sonorities. Darker colors
(from the first movement) continue to interject, but are always overwhelmed by a sense of
free-wheeling excitement. The work presses on to an ecstatic coda – with a sense of
unfettered joy.

Composed by Christoph Willibald Von Gluck. Arranged by Thomas Ling of Sibu. Classical,Contemporary,Standards. Score. 4 pages. Thomas Swee Chin #6714531. Published by Thomas Swee Chin (A0.818538).

Orpheus and Eurydice is one of the most famous mythical love stories in world literature.

Dance of the Blessed Spirits is a ballet excerpt from Christoph Willibald Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice, which is based on the story of Orpheus from the Greek mythology. This was the famous flute solo found in Act 2.
The texture is mainly three layered: melody, chords and a bass line. Slow music is about resonance. The melody will be coloured and enhanced with plenty of well judged damper pedal effect.

Composed by Victor Rebullida. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary. Individual part. 14 pages. Victor Rebullida #6055667. Published by Victor Rebullida (A0.1021517).

Recorded by Alberto Royo in CD Mistúra. Música para guitarra. Cuatro autores contemporáneos aragoneses. Edited by Delicias Discográficas 2001. Reference DCD-28. More information about the CD: alberto.guitarra@gmail.com

Gioco is a five part piece:

  1. Allegro leggiero; tpo. giusto
  2. Triste e intenso; poco rubato
  3. Scherzando
  4. Adagio meditativo
  5. Allegro agitato
The author wrote:

Gioco, an Italian word meaning game, is the title of this guitar work composed in 1994.Gioco is a work of current aesthetic, atonal, built however on a structure as classic as that of a Sonata, of great conciseness and clarity and brief duration. It consists of five movements in which the former has a simple, school sonata shape, with two well-identifiable themes, one ethereal based on sets of bells and harmonics and another choppy, contrasting, in parallel ninth intervals, which are developed and subsequently reexposed at the end of the movement.

The second movement is a slow time when the resonance of arpeggiated sounds is important. As will happen in the fourth half, the music conveys a sense of freedom, almost improvisation resulting from its unsympted writing and the irregularity of the measure.

The third is a Scherzo in which humorous character is accentuated by the rapid descending and ascending glissandi. No less grotesque is the contrasting quote of Gaspar Sanz's Spaniard played in a singular way as will be seen in the interpretation, suddenly interrupted by the glissandi.

The fourth is another slow movement in which resonances are also the center. Here you resort to obtaining a particular, harmonic sound similar to the sound of a gong, by placing paper clip on the three boards of the guitar.

The fifth and final time is live movement in the form of a purr in which the different episodes are quotes from the themes appeared in the previous movements.

The player says about this work:

Work dated in 1994, virtuoso and contrasting, of resounding accessibility, not intending to reach the audience using easy resources but an admirable capacity for communication, Gioco is divided into five movements in which varied colours and textures occur and almost all the abundant classical and contemporary timbric resources of the guitar are exploited with intelligence, (controlled challenges, blows on the board, metallic vibration of a clip...), In this work one of the outstanding findings of its author is the alternative use in the Scherzando of his contemporary language and two recognizable literal quotations of the Aragonese Baroque guitarist Gaspar Sanz, which appear softly in an ironic and evocative loudness.

Justino Losada wrote this review:
Gioco, represents a continuous game of sonorities of very rich timbric nuances as well as an exacerbated game of frets (such as in its 3rd movement Scherzando), and abundant contemporary resources such as the microtonal vicinity of the detuned passages or the blows on the box for our interpreter to show of his skills, a task that although complicated he knows how to perform perfectly coming out of all difficulties. Rebullida's language is not simple, but the composer is clearly aware of the difficulties to reach a large audience, and to do so he polishes his language by seeking an exchange between modern and ancient sonorities in a continuous game creating a climate of warm and direct communication.

Composed by Alicia Willard. 20th Century,Blues,Contemporary. 34 pages. Alicia Santee-Davis #2923157. Published by Alicia Santee-Davis (A0.1027761).

Periwinkle is a song cycle that was originally composed for mezzo-soprano and piano, but has been arranged for soprano and piano; it is a collection of character pieces using original poetry by Alicia Willard. High High Shoes is an upbeat, rhythmically active piece that illustrates the exhilaration and anxiety in reaching for one’s desires. Wings is a hauntingly slow array of uneasy dissonances, using only one line of text that is chopped into fragments and slowly arranged into a comprehensible statement. Boulders on Our Shoulders has a lilting jazz feel, including several piano solos that incorporate many aspects of the blues. Follow the Borrowers is much more introspective, with the music vividly conveying what the text colorfully provides in such lines as I’ll caress the tongue shapes. The title of the cycle is taken from a line of poetry in which the periwinkle dirt in the sky is introduced, providing one of many colors that are portrayed in the pieces. Periwinkle was written in 2009 and premiered at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts by Stephanie McAllister, mezzo-soprano, and the composer at the piano. After its recomposition, the soprano edition was premiered in Fairbanks, Alaska in 2016 by Amy Ingram, soprano, with the composer at the piano.

Composed by William Grosvenor Neil. Contemporary. Score and parts. 66 pages. TheComposerStudio.Com, LLC #6662561. Published by TheComposerStudio.Com, LLC (A0.980597).

Composed in collaboration with clarinetist Dr. Corey Mackey, this three-movement concerto presents three distinct musical impressions led by the lyrically virtuosic clarinet solo. Each movement progressively gains a broader perspective of time and space, from the minute movements of the hummingbird, broadening to the majesty of mountains and ending with a vast impression of traveling through the universe at the speed of light. Movement one, Trochilidae-Allegro, celebrates the brilliant animation of the hummingbird. Emily Dickenson called it a resonance of emerald, a rush of cochineal. The clarinet solo imitates its mercurial flight darting and hovering in and around the orchestra. The second movement, Spiritual Adaptation to Higher Altitudes-Adagio, illustrates he slow and dramatic ascent of the clarinet through a broad and majestic orchestral soundscape culminating with an ecstatic summit vista. The third movement, Scherzo at the Speed of Light-Vivace, presents a sonic impression of sound and light in the universe, the clarinet spinning and gliding effortlessly through space arriving triumphantly in its home key of Bb  in the final measures.

Composed by Nicole Elyse DiPaolo. 20th Century,Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional. Score. 18 pages. Nicole Elyse DiPaolo #1067479. Published by Nicole Elyse DiPaolo (A0.1490673).

Vignettes is a set of 5 short (2 or 3-page) late-intermediate piano pieces that introduce unique aspects of Maurice Ravel's piano writing that students tend to find challenging. Given that Ravel himself wrote very little at the intermediate level for solo piano (except the recently rediscovered Prelude in A minor), I saw a great need for appropriate Ravel-preparatory repertoire.

Notes on the Pieces in Vignettes

1.      Réminiscences d’Espagne

This work is an homage to Maurice Ravel's Habañera-styled pieces. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: numerous hand and arm crossings, 3-against-4 polyrhythms as evident in the habañera, very high registers, dissonances like German 7th chords and diminished thirds, and Spanish-flavored modal writing, to name a few. This piece also recalls my time as a cruise ship duo pianist aboard the ms Maasdam, which visited five ports in Spain.

2.      Le jardin des papillons (The Butterfly Garden)

Le jardin des papillons is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in pieces including the Sonatine, Le tombeau de Couperin, and others. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), whole tone sonorities, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music.

3.      Le jardin englouti (The Sunken Garden)

Le jardin englouti is an homage to Maurice Ravel's minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). This piece was inspired by the Sunken Garden, a former landmark on the Indiana University campus that sat across the street from the practice building in which I taught dozens of piano students, coached numerous singers, and learned piles of solo and collaborative repertoire before moving away in 2019. The Biology Building greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.

4.      Point Pelée

Point Pelée is an homage to Maurice Ravel's toccata-style movements, like the finale of the Sonatine or the toccata from Le tombeau de Couperin. This piece can be programmed with Le jardin des papillons and Le jardin englouti to form a three-movement suite that roughly corresponds to the Sonatine. This movement was inspired by Point Pelée National Park, in Ontario, Canada, a frequent roosting spot for monarch butterflies making the long migration from Canada to southern Mexico. In this piece I tried to capture the flutters of the roosting monarchs' wings as they'd settle into the trees at night and venture out across Lake Erie after resting. You can find more information on the park here: https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/on/pelee/nature/faune-wildlife/monarque-monarch

5.      À la manière d'une Pavane

À la manière d'une Pavane is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in his Pavane pour une infante défunte and the Pavane from the Mother Goose suite. It combines Baroque-reminiscent polyphony with the clarity and delicacy of articulation required more widely in the Ravel repertoire.
