It is dedicated to the memory of William Talbot, my organ teacher. Total playing time is approximately 18 minutes.

Nights of the Fiesta is eight pages in length, starting out with a short fanfare type introduction and merging into a Spanish motif. It is in the key of E minor and in triple meter. Not difficult to play, but does require good technique. There is a moving left hand, and right hand utilizes parallel thirds and quite a few repeating notes. Part Two of this suite is called The Sunken Gardens. It is in the key of A minor and goes back and forth between three and six in meter. Consisting much of single notes in both hands, some parallel thirds in the right hand and using triplets. Part Three, entitled The Old Mission, is in a meter of six with directions to play forcefully at the beginning and reverently up until the section sounding like bells ringing. B minor is the key, and this portion of Mr. Mahan's suite requires a left hand capable of a rolling 16th note accompaniment. The ending is on a peaceful D major chord. There are some repeated notes in this collection.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in Holborn, London on August 15, 1875 and died from pneumonia at the age of 37 in Croy- don, England on September 1, 1912.  At an early age his grandfather began teaching him how to play the violin. His musical ability was obvious and at the age of 15, his extended family arranged for Taylor to study at the Royal College of Music. While at RCM he changed from violin to composition, working under professor Charles Villiers Stanford. His classmates included Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. He was later helped by Edward Elgar in 1898, who described Coleridge-Taylor as far and away the cleverest fellow going amongst the young men.  By 1896, Coleridge-Taylor was earning a reputation as a composer and was also accepted as an excellent conductor. In 1898 at the age of 23 he composed the African Suite. Danse Nègre is the last of the four movements that make up the African Suite, Op. 35 (proceeded by Introduction, A Negro Love Song, and Valse). Coleridge-Taylor saw it as his mission in life to help establish the dignity of the black man. He was greatly influenced by black American poet P. L. Dunbar. He made three successful visits to the United States to great acclaim. In 1904, on his first USA tour he was received by President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House. Above all, though, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was known as a man of great dignity and patience.

Listen to this piece hereSuite for Band took shape from two inspirations: the first, the haunting motifs of Frederic Chopin’s Etude Op. 10, No. 12, often referred to as “Revolutionary� or the “Bombardment of Warsaw�; the second, the still-invigorating works for band of Holst, Grainger, and Vaughn-Williams. Each movement explores different aspects of Chopin’s Etude – the first in a lively dance, the second in a gentle melody, and the finale in a rush of energy that brings the work to an exciting close. Each instrument is featured at least once which makes the Suite ideal for the developing ensemble. I owe many thanks to Dr. Thomas McCauley and his bands at Montclair State University and Windhaven in 2017 for reading the work through various stages of development and for their helpful feedback.
