SKU: A0.1262685

By Sharon Wilson. By B. Ogden, G W Bethune, George Washington Bethune, W A Ogden, and William Augustine Ogden. Arranged by Sharon Wilson and Sharon Wilson Music. 19th Century,Christian,Easter,Multicultural,Sacred,World. 23 pages. Sharon Wilson #855694. Published by Sharon Wilson (A0.1262685).

Here is a flowing instrumental trio arrangement (for VIOLIN and CELLO duet with PIANO accompaniment) of a beautiful hymn from the late 1800's titled The City of Our God when associated with the lyrics by George Washington Bethune. The tune was composed by William Augustine Ogden. This hymn may be better known by its Spanish title Jerusalén Mi Amado Hogar (Jerusalem My Beloved Home) when used with contemporary lyrics by Nicolás Samojluk. The original lyrics by G. W. Bethune are shown below.

Both the VIOLIN and the CELLO get to lead with the melody at times making this a fun and equally challenging piece for both instruments while adding variety for the listeners. The VIOLIN plays the melody for the first verse and then the CELLO leads with the melody for the second verse. The song begins in the key of G major for the first verse, then transitions to the key of C major during the piano interlude between verses.

The range for each part is as follows: VIOLIN ~ A4 to A5; CELLO ~ B2 to D4. All notes for both the VIOLIN and CELLO are playable in the first position making this arrangement an excellent choice for early-intermediate string players. The PIANO accompaniment is written for an intermediate player.  Duration 2:50.

The purchase price includes these printing options:
1. a grand staff (9 pages) with all parts on each page
2. separate scores for the VIOLIN and CELLO (2 pages each) and PIANO (4 pages)
3. a combined VIOLIN and CELLO score (4 pages)

Lyrics by G. W. Bethune
O city of the jasper wall,
And of the pearly gate,
For thee amid the storms of life,
Our weary spirits wait,
O may we walk the streets of gold,
No mortal feet have trod;
O may we worship at the shrine,
The temple of our God.

Chorus:
O land of bliss!
O land of light!
O city of the jasper wall!
O land forever bright!

SKU: A0.881493

Composed by W. David Hedrick. Contemporary. Score and parts. 44 pages. William David Hedrick #32967. Published by William David Hedrick (A0.881493).

The Wild Swans at Coole is a text by William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) with music by W. David Hedrick. This is duet for lyric baritone and bass with string choir and flute. It is approximately 8 minutes in duration and is an extended lyrical composition. The poet reflects on a time around 1919 when he visited the lake at Augusta Gregory's Coole Park residence. He returns 15 years later and observes how the swans have not changed but that life has. This full score has all string parts, solo flute, and piano reduction (for rehearsal only). The elegance of this composition is best displayed with the string accompaniment and does not have the energy and urgency with piano alone. The piano reduction is included for rehearsing the music. The piece is suitable for most concert venues, festival, and contests. The audio clip is a computer rendering in Finale.

The text Widening Circles is from Rilke’s Book of Hours, Love Poems to God reflecting on reflection; how the longer we live and connect with others, the more our sphere of interaction and “self†stretches out, like ripples in a pond. A great programmatic piece for high school, collegiate, or community ensembles.

W. Spencer Germany is a young composer from Memphis, Tennessee. Beginning composing at the age of 15, he has had premieres with featured performances by multiple choirs. He has been noted as bringing fresh and new vitality to his music. Composed by George Shearing. Arranged by Steve William Lussing. Jazz. Score and parts. 3 pages. S. W. Lussing #3089203. Published by S. W. Lussing (A0.923849).

Here's an old jazz standard that will live forever because it is so much fun to sing and listen to. Lullaby in Birdland is one of this guitar player's favorites. It was originally written in 2/2, or Cut time, which is how a song written in basic 4/4 timing is notated when it is intended that any performance of it should bring a little bounce to the beat. I'm all for that, but I have a rule of thumb for any song which has enough bounce, that it can be waltzed to, and this song is no exception, so I've reformatted it to the appropriate time signature. The notation in this arrangement is in fact how the song is currently being sung. I play this arrangement at about 80 beats per minute on the guitar. The chords in this arrangement are how I play Lullaby in Birdland, and they aren't too far a departure from the original by George Shearing.

SKU: A0.1272749

Composed by Felix Mendelssohn / W.H. Cummings. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christmas,Holiday,Sacred,Traditional. 23 pages. Con Spirito Music #864944. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1272749).

One of the “Great Four†Anglican hymns of the 19th century, Charles Wesley’s (1707-1788) “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing†first appeared in the 1739 collection, Hymns and Sacred Poems, by Wesley and his brother John (1703-1791) under the title “Hymn for Christmas-Day.â€

Based on a verse from the Gospel of Luke (“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.†— 2:14), the hymn tells of an angelic host singing praises from Heaven above to Christ — the God incarnate, Savior and Redeemer of the world.

George Whitefield, a fellow Anglican cleric and founder with the Wesley brothers of the evangelical movement known as Methodism, adapted the hymn and published it in his 1754 Collection of Hymns for Social Worship. Additional revisions were made by other editors, including the repetition of the opening lines, “Hark! the herald angels sing / glory to the new-born king†at the end of each stanza, as it is commonly sung today.

Wesley envisioned his hymn being sung to the same tune as his “Christ the Lord is Risen Today†(published as “Hymn for Easter-Day†in Hymns and Sacred Poems). However, the tune MENDELSSOHN, an adaptation by English musician William H. Cummings (1831-1915) of music from Felix Mendelssohn’s 1840 secular cantata, Festgesang, is overwhelmingly associated with Wesley’s text today. This arrangement proceeds as follows:

•  Introduction: brass, organ, timpani
•  Verse 1: organ
•  Verse 2: brass, timpani
•  Interlude
•  Verse 3: organ, brass, timpani, with alternate harmonization

Includes full score, parts for Organ, Bb Trumpets 1-2, F Horn, Trombone, Tuba, Timpani, and reproducible bulletin insert for voices.

Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. 20th Century,Contemporary,Sacred,Standards,Wedding. Score and parts. 9 pages. Regis Bookshar #6476669. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813765).

Thaxted (Bb) (Brass Quintet) - Intermediate - Digital Download. This marvelous arrangement of Thaxted, a hymn tune based on the Andante Maestoso section from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Holst's The Planets, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for church services, especially Weddings and Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. However, if you are looking to perform this selection for concerts or recitals, I would suggest you look for the arrangement of Jupiter (Andante Maestoso from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets), also by Regis Bookshar. These arrangements are suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing these selections as well. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (9 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions.
The Planets, written between 1914 and 1917 by the English composer Gustav Holst, premiered at the Queen's Hall in London, on September 29, 1918 for an invited audience of about 250 people. In the fourth movement, Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, Holst portrays Jupiter's supposedly characteristic abundance of life and vitality. Nobility and generosity are allegedly characteristics of those born under Jupiter, and in the slower, middle section marked Andante Maestoso, perhaps the most well-known theme from The Planets (and the theme on which this arrangement is based), Holst provides a broad tune embodying these traits. In 1921, Holst adapted the theme to fit the patriotic poem I Vow to Thee, My Country by Cecil Spring Rice, and was written as a unison song with orchestra. It did not appear as the hymn tune until 1926, when Holst harmonized this melody, named Thaxted, named after the English village where he had lived for many years. Holst's friend Ralph Vaughan Williams included it in Songs of Praise. It has since been performed at numerous occasions, most notably for the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981, and also at the funerals of Princess Diana in 1997, Margaret Thatcher in 2013 and Senator John McCain where it was performed at the Washington National Cathedral on September 1, 2018. In addition to being used as the melody for the solemn, patriotic hymn I Vow to Thee, My Country, other settings of this hymn tune also include O God, Beyond All Praising, by Michael Perry in 1982, O Spirit All Embracing by Delores Dufner in 1995 and We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God, a paraphrase of the Te Deum Laudemus by Stephen P. Starke in 1999.
Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to the Trumpet Quintet version and this version for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Trumpets (one of which has the lead), 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection. There are Quintets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are added as often as possible. I'm certain that this beautiful arrangement of Thaxted based on the Andante Maestoso section from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Holst's The Planets, w.
