Johann Georg Albrechtsberger studiò musica presso l'Abbazia di Melk e filosofia al Seminario dei Gesuiti a Vienna e divenne uno dei più importanti e noti maestri di contrappunto della sua epoca. La sua grande fama di teorico gli procurò numerosi allievi che giunsero a Vienna per seguire le sue lezioni, fra essi vi furono Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Ignaz Moscheles, Joseph Weigl e Ludwig van Beethoven. Inoltre scrisse due trattati teorici e un metodo per pianoforte. Fu amico di Franz Joseph Haydn e Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
