Evocative music that speaks to loneliness and sharingEasy to follow trance-style electronic trackStars Through the Rain (2022) by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) and Walter Torres (BMI)SAB and electronic track by Walter TorresText — Stars Through the Rain by Kim StaffordĀ Program note — Duration 3:23Difficulty 2 (High school)Language — SpanishProgram note — Commissioned by Inversion’s new youth choir Nova for its inaugural concert ā€œStar Stuffā€ in June 2023, Stars Through the Rain is scored for SAB chorus by Adrienne Inglis with electronic track created by Walter Torres. Kim Stafford’s poignant poem of the same name tells the story of a young woman living alone in a remote corner of the world. She witnesses remarkable images of a rainbow over the moon and stars showing through the rain showers. She yearns to share these beautiful experiences with another person. The piece sets the choruses of the poem, which start in a lonely mood and subtly evolve, giving the listener the hope of being lifted into a sharing relationship with another soul. The electronic track weaves natural and synthesized elements together, creating a dreamlike soundscape evoking the night sky. The emotive arpeggiated melody line alternates between minor and major tonality, capturing her melancholic yet hopeful yearning to share this sublime moment with somebody else. The driving percussion elements represent the pitter-patter of rain drops. Synthesized pads provide the harmony and are affected by filter sweeps, a sonic interpretation of starlight refracting through rain sheets.YouTube link for electronic track: https://youtu.be/HlQFoy9hw0E.

The tune is believed to have originated in the early 18th century and was likely composed by a Scottish fiddler. It was first published in the late 18th century in the Scots Musical Museum, a collection of Scottish songs and tunes compiled by James Johnson. The title Miss Stewart of Garth refers to a woman named Anne Stewart, who was the daughter of John Stewart, the laird of Garth. The Garth estate was located in Perthshire, Scotland, and was known for its picturesque beauty and its association with the Jacobite cause.During the 18th century, the Jacobites were a political movement in Scotland that sought to restore the Stuart dynasty to the throne of Great Britain. Many Highlanders supported the Jacobite cause, and the Garth estate was known to be sympathetic to their efforts. It's possible that Miss Stewart of Garth was composed as a tribute to Anne Stewart or as a way of expressing support for the Jacobite cause. The tune has a melancholy and wistful quality that has made it a favorite among Scottish musicians and dancers for centuries.Over the years, Miss Stewart of Garth has been played in many different contexts, from traditional Highland gatherings to modern concerts and recordings. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the beauty and power of Scottish music, and it remains a beloved part of Scotland's cultural heritage to this day.

Choral Choir (SSAA) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.939403 Composed by Robert Debbaut. Contemporary. Octavo. 31 pages. ROBERT DEBBAUT #6342191. Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.939403).  American lyric poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was the first woman and the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection entitled Love Songs. Teasdale was roundly praised for her lyric mastery and romantic subjects. Her poems most often take on the first person role of their female narrators and protagonists. Teasdale’s first poem was published in 1907. Later that year she published her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, written mainly for the Italian actress Eleonora Duse. In 1911 her second collection Helen of Troy and Other Poems received high praise from critics. Her third collection, Rivers to the Sea from 1915 was and remains a best seller and has been reprinted several times. The three poems used here, Joy, The Answer, and .To Joy all date from 1915. These three poems were also included in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Love Songs. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1884. She was a sickly child, so much so that she was home schooled. As a young woman she had many suitors, including the poet Vachel Lindsay, who thought he could never provide for her. She eventually married businessman Ernst Filsinger, a great admirer of her poems. The couple relocated to New York City. Filsinger’s constant business travel left Teasdale very lonely and depressed. She eventually relocated to another state so she could quickly divorce him. Filsinger was shocked. Teasdale took up again with Vachel Lindsay, who has himself married and had children. Lindsay committed suicide in 1931 and Teasdale followed likewise two years later. She is interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1098365 Composed by Giuseppe Verdi. Arranged by Francesco Buono. Classical,Opera. Score and Parts. 121 pages. Francesco Buono #702227. Published by Francesco Buono (A0.1098365). STRIDE LA VAMPA! from II Act of ā€œIl Trovatoreā€ for Contralto or Mezzosoprano Voice or Bb Cornet Il Trovatore is the second opera in Giuseppe Verdi's popular trilogy created between Rigoletto and La Traviata. Il Trovatore is a drama in four acts and eight pictures, set in Spain at the beginning of the 15th century, which tells, with a beautiful expressive song, flaming passions such as love, jealousy, revenge, hatred and lust. Manrico and the Count of Luna, in love with the same woman, face each other until death as enemies, without knowing that they are brothers. Belonging to two different social classes, they only share Leonora's love which doubles the existing hatred of social conflict. STRIDE LA VAMPA! At the foot of a mountain, in a camp, some gypsies dedicated to their activities cheer their work with songs, dances and toasts (gypsy chorus: See the gloomy nocturnal remains). A pained voice bursts into the general cheerfulness: having woken up from her recurring nightmare, Azucena, mother of Manrico, tells that many years before her she saw her mother die at the stake accused of witchcraft by the old Count di Luna (Stride la vampa) . Her mother's last words had been a plea for revenge, so she had kidnapped the Count's son still in diapers and, blinded by her desperation, decided to throw him into the fire; however, horrified by the vision of her dead mother, she had confused her own son with the child she had kidnapped and had thrown him into her stake in her place.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.787256 Composed by Greg Bartholomew. Concert,Contemporary,Holiday,Patriotic. Octavo. 12 pages. Burke & Bagley #49733. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787256). The Promise of Liberty, available for either SATB or unison/2-part treble choir with optional guitar or piano accompaniment, is an adaptation of the sonnet The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus (1883). The sonnet was written to raise money for the construction of the Statue of Liberty's pedestal and has graced the entrance to the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor since 1945. The chorus for this work is adapted from the Lazarus poem, while the verses are new text written by the composer. Duration ca. 3 minutes. The Promise of Liberty Winds blow fierce and foul storms rage. Safe shelter seems a hopeless dream. But in the dark a promise beams, a beacon to a golden age.  [Chorus] Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Give me the wretched from your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.  So cries the strong heroic woman, raising her arm to light the way. Her words ring out from day to day to greet each wave of immigrants. [Repeat chorus] Some crossed the sea in a tempest squall. More came by land up the hemisphere. Still there's room for everyone here. The promise of liberty welcomes all. [Repeat chorus] Winds still blow and storms still threaten the shelter we build in this new land. But here we weave a fabric grand Made strong from many colored threads. [Repeat chorus].

Choral Choir (4-Part) - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.535382 Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary,Sacred. Octavo. 187 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3025403. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.535382). The Revelations of Divine Love (Metaphors from Sea and Sky) (2009), an oratorio for soprano, baritone, chorus, and chamber orchestra (0000.1100.1perc.strings), was commissioned for and is dedicated to the choir ofRoyal Holloway, University of London and Rupert Gough, director of choral music. The texts of the work are adapted primarily from the writings of Julian of Norwich (c. 1342–1416).Julian is best-known for her Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love (c. 1393), believed to be the first Englishlanguagebook written by a woman. Considered one of the most significant English mystics of alltime, Julian lived a reclusive life as an anchoress at the Church of St. Julian in Norwich, England (hertrue name is unknown). Regarded even during her lifetime as a spiritual authority, her optimisticvisions have been very influential in the years that have followed.Texts are also drawn from three additional sources: an excerpt from the Book of Margery Kempe(translated by Christopher M. Brunelle), two poems by English poet Robert Herrick (1591–1674),and a poem by the American writer Elizabeth Kirschner (b. 1955).The primary concept underlying this oratorio is the presence of two distinct discourses. One is asequence taken from Julian’s religious visions. The other is a sonic geography of Nantucket Island(located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts in the United States). This interconnected conceptwas inspired by the writings of the great Scottish poet George Mackay Brown (1921–1996). Livinghis entire life on Scotland’s Orkney Islands, Mackay Brown consistently explored the transpositionof religious imagery and events to his native landscape. (For example, the poem Apple-Basket, Apple-Blossom takes the story and structure of the Stations of the Cross, and maps them onto imagery ofdistinctly Orcadian character.)The landscape of Nantucket Island has been the driving force behind a large number of mycompositions for many years. In this oratorio, Julian’s visions are transposed from Norwich andmapped onto the Nantucket landscape. Each movement of the work thus has two parallel purposes:a setting of the visionary words, and a portrayal of a specific place in Nantucket’s geography. Muchof the music was planned in the actual locations. Since the soloists and choir must, by necessity, singthe words, a great deal of the landscape is left to the orchestra. Thus, the orchestra’s role issubstantially greater than simply accompaniment.Because of these two discourses, the oratorio is not intended as comprehensive working out of allaspects of Julian’s visions, nor does it use her own structure and sequence. Rather, it takes herbeautiful words, and the fundamentals of her visions, and attempts to create a new narrative andspiritual experience from them. This is the full score.  The vocal score is available for sale.  The parts are available on rental from the publisher.

In her naivety and innocence, she sees kindness and virtue in all the people she passes along the way. But - unbeknown to her - there are sinister goings-on in the lives of all the characters she passes. However, on hearing her happy little tune - although Pippa is unaware of it - her song has a positive effect on all those people she passes, influencing them to change their ways and start acting for the good. A story about the power of song and positivity - and how that can affect others without us even realising it. This is Pippa’s song as she passes by.
