The next part, where the choir sings at a slower pace, is about Christ's love for humanity. The final section is performed at a moderately fast tempo and it is about Christ's eternal glory. The speed for the Amen section could be stretched to bring the anthem to a brilliant conclusion.    .

Extracts from a letter Beethoven wrote to his friend Carl Amenda, in 1799, in which he first confessed about the loss of his hearing, and from the Heiligenstadt Testament, a letter Beethoven wrote to his brothers in 1802. In the latter 1100-word document he writes of frustration with his growing hearing problem, at the same time attributing his gradual withdrawal from society to this illness. In the letter he also plays with the idea of suicide. He never posted it or showed it to anyone. Beethoven was quoted as saying the opening motif of his Fifth Symphony is the sound of Fate knocking at the door.� I felt it appropriate to quote this in my piece. Intermediate. 5 minutes.

Written to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of World War II, this work is based on the writings, imprisonment, and martyrdom of German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The entire work is based on the hymn tune Vater Unser (Geistlich Leider,1539). As I completed the work, it became more apparent that I had not completely addressed the suffering of the Jewish people. My solution was to add one final movement to serve as a memorial based on -Ani Ma'Am in the 12th century tune often sung by the Jewish people in the Nazi concentration camps. The final statement of this theme is sung concurrently with the Christian theme, Vater Unser, with both joining together in a psalm of David. You are my light. You are my song. Of whom shall I be afraid?

This is the second of Greg Bartholomew's three choral settings of text From the Odes of Solomon, as recorded by the Ars Brunensis Chorus.  The Odes of Solomon are believed to have been written around the year 100 A.D., and include strong parallels to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Scholars have debated whether the Odes should be considered Jewish, Christian or Gnostic, and whether they were first written in Greek, Hebrew or Syriac. Early Christian writings refer to and quote from them. A Syriac manuscript containing the text of most of the Odes was discovered in 1909 by the English scholar J. Rendel Harris, and other partial texts in various languages have also been found. There are 42 Odes. Some fragments are still missing from Odes I and III, and no part of Ode II has yet been found.
