Her work is widely acknowledged to be one of the great Christian spiritual classics. It is also the earliest surviving book in middle English written by a woman. The short text was written soon after Julian recovered from a severe illness and describes sixteen visions that she had received: revelations of Christ's suffering and God's love. The second version (long text) was written perhaps twenty years later; it is a greatly expanded volume that includes her meditations on what she had been shown. This work begins with a spoken passage, the very first words of her work, directly followed by a soliloquy that includes some of Julian's best known quotations (e.g. all shall be well). I chose to adapt Julian's language into modern English, while remaining as faithful as possible to the style and intent of her original text. The text was written by Charles Wesley and has been used in Advent services regularly since it was written in the 1740s. The text is often set to many tunes but the one used in this version is Hyfrydol, This tune was written by Rowland Prichard about 100 years after Wesley's text and is used extensively in many hymnals but especially for this particular text. This arrangement is for 3-5 octave handbell choir, although it is unusual in that the 4 octave version does require the use of the F3 bell. Other than that this is a relatively simple, if thickly orchestrated, arrangement. There are three sections using different methods of music making, the first is regular ringing, the second is extensive marts and mart-lifts, and the third explores musical canon before bringing back the more traditional bell ringing styles.

The collection includes typical types of tunes, including reels, jigs, hornpipes, waltzes. There are a few tunes that don't fall exactly into those catagories, including an old time tune, a quasi cajun tune, a slow tune that is quasi Scottish, and one air that was originally written for solo cello, and is more of a concert piece for cello and fiddle, in a folk style. There are short descriptions of the tunes that tell a bit about my life, where I lived and traveled, and what I was doing.  Most of the tunes were written at a specific place, some on trips, and some at home. Memories of the places and the people there are woven into the sound. I sincerely hope you enjoy this music!

The Trumpet Tune and Air was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop.  Written around 1700, for many years this piece was attributed to Henry Purcell. But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite. This full version is arranged as a duet for Flute and Violin and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. The short sample here and the full length version on the youtube link are from the Clarinet and Alto Saxophone version of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792139). The Brahms Ten Studies were originally written for Horn or Trumpet and were first published soon after his death in 1897. Unfortunately there is not much written about the origins of the Studies. There are questions as to whether they are original or manufactured by an enterprising musician. In my opinion, a few of the studies, especially the slower ones have the stamp of the Master on them. Mr. Cherry believes that the Studies are authentic. It is fairly certain that Brahms’s father did play some horn and there is a good chance that Johannes performed in a horn club as well. The Studies were all originally written in the key of C treble clef. Mr. Cherry has taken the liberty to transpose many of them into different keys for musical variety and technique. This is a common practice for many Trumpet and Horn study books. He has also added some breath marks and alternate slide positions. Many thanks to friend & colleague, Ralph Sauer, who helped with the editing of these studies. These studies are all in bass clef and appropriate for performers of intermediate level and higher.
