A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon in D was originally scored for three violins arranged in canon accompanied by a basso continuo playing an ostinato pattern, repeating the same harmonic progression throughout the entire composition.Rgeis Bookshar has now arranged this composition for a String Trio, consisting of 1 Viola, 1 Violoncello and 1 Double Bass, which play the melody in canon and a Keyboard instrument, either a Piano or Organ, which plays the ostinato pattern.
