Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1120437 Composed by Gearg Friedrich HAENDEL. Arranged by Yves Bouillot. Baroque,Opera. Score and parts. 41 pages. Yves Bouillot #721707. Published by Yves Bouillot (A0.1120437). The action takes place in the Persian Empire in 480 BC. AD and is based somewhat on the story of Emperor Xerxes I. There is, however, little real connection between the Story and the libretto or its music. Serse's first aria, Ombra mai fu, is Xerxes' love song for a tree set to one of Handel's most beautiful and famous melodies, often performed in an orchestral arrangement. It is known as 'Largo de Haendel', although the score actually refers to it as 'larghetto'. Grade 2.

By Georg Frideric Handel. Arranged by Rita Arendz. Contest,Festival,Instructional,Opera,Romantic Period,Wedding. Brass Band. 27 pages. Rita Arendz #643324. Published by Rita Arendz (A0.1038374). For Vocal and Brass Band. Ombra mai fu, also known as Largo from Xerxes is one of Handel's best-known arias despite the opera Serse (1738) only surviving 5 performances. As the opening aria to the opera, its intent was to be a love song. The original lyrics translate from Italian to Never was a shade. It references the Platanus orientalis or Plane Tree and what lovely shade it provides. The Plane Tree is related to the American Sycamore tree (Platanus occidentalis). On Christmas eve 1906, Canadian inventor and radio pioneer, Reginald Fessenden broadcast the first AM radio program, using this aria as its opener; hence, the association with classical Christmas playlists. The range of voice suits the mezzo-soprano, the contralto, or the countertenor. The music is suitable for concerts. Its love theme lends well to weddings, and its plaintive melody is suitable for funerals. Duration ~2:30. 27 pages.

David McKeown #5042589. Published by David McKeown (A0.587914). Ombra Mai Fù is the beautiful opening aria from Handel’s Opera Serse, (Xerxes). The opera was not well received when it premiered in London in 1736 and sank into immediate obscurity, only to re-emerged as one of Handel’s best-loved works nearly two hundred years later. Ombra Mai Fù is often referred to as Handel’s Largo. In 1906 Ombra Mai Fù gained the distinction of being the first piece of music ever broadcast on radio. This full version of Ombra Mai Fù is arranged as a Solo for Viola and Piano and both parts are reasonably simple; the performance time is around three minutes. The pdf file contains both the piano score and two alternative solo parts. One viola part is high and at the sung pitch, the other is easier to play and an octave lower.
