Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1489491). “Rising Sun” was composed as a gesture of friendship between the two great nations of Japan and the United States of America.  As a uniformed member of the Armed Forces, mine is a unique position of being able to share such a meaningful gift in an official capacity that bears great depth and meaning far beyond similar civilian cultural exchanges.Before being assigned to Yokota Air Base in Japan, I was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.  Part of my duties as a trumpeter in the military is to sound “Taps” as part of the full complement of a fallen hero’s military honors.  Among the most somber occasions of fulfilling that special privilege was on behalf of a WWII Seaman, Wesley Brown.  In 2021, his remains were identified and shipped home to America’s heartland after 80 years of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.Fast forward to August 6 and 9, 2023, shortly after I arrived at my new duty station in Japan.  On those dates in 1946, nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  I recorded in my journal on the 9th that my walk to work was quite sobering as I realized that my presence there was a direct result of that complicated global conflict.  With significant symbolism, Pacific Brass read “Rising Sun” for the first time that day.After nearly 80 years, the post-war occupation has evolved to a thriving partnership most worthy of celebration.  This composition “Rising Sun” potently delivers a personalized celebratory gesture from an American Airman to all those communities we serve throughout the glorious “land of the rising sun.”In the music itself, one can picture a dim early dawn with the serene opening of the low brass trio.  The musical content is repeated more loudly, with brilliant trumpet interjections as the sun crests over the early horizon.  The music morphs and grows; varies and repeats, as it is intended to depict the subtly but rapidly changing beauties of an orange-filled sunrise.  At last, the colors fade and the new day has begun, with a full brightness of hope.

This marvelous arrangement of Thaxted, a hymn tune based on the Andante Maestoso section from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Holst's The Planets, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for church services, especially Weddings and Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. However, if you are looking to perform this selection for concerts or recitals, I would suggest you look for the arrangement of Jupiter (Andante Maestoso from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets), also by Regis Bookshar. These arrangements are suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing these selections as well. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (9 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions.The Planets, written between 1914 and 1917 by the English composer Gustav Holst, premiered at the Queen's Hall in London, on September 29, 1918 for an invited audience of about 250 people. In the fourth movement, Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, Holst portrays Jupiter's supposedly characteristic abundance of life and vitality. Nobility and generosity are allegedly characteristics of those born under Jupiter, and in the slower, middle section marked Andante Maestoso, perhaps the most well-known theme from The Planets (and the theme on which this arrangement is based), Holst provides a broad tune embodying these traits. In 1921, Holst adapted the theme to fit the patriotic poem I Vow to Thee, My Country by Cecil Spring Rice, and was written as a unison song with orchestra. It did not appear as the hymn tune until 1926, when Holst harmonized this melody, named Thaxted, named after the English village where he had lived for many years. Holst's friend Ralph Vaughan Williams included it in Songs of Praise. It has since been performed at numerous occasions, most notably for the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981, and also at the funerals of Princess Diana in 1997, Margaret Thatcher in 2013 and Senator John McCain where it was performed at the Washington National Cathedral on September 1, 2018. Pura Alegria is one of Eddie Lewis’ en clave compositions, where every rhythm from every phrase in the piece is derived from the clave. The clave is a rhythm from west Africa that came to the tropical islands with the slaves. From there, hundreds of years later, the rhythm became the underlying groove for a number of modern Latin dance music styles. Eddie Lewis was exposed to the clave rhythms during a period of twenty years when he was making his living primarily as a salsa trumpet player. While Eddie’s compositions are not salsa, his writing has been forever influenced by that music and the people. And that influence is not limited to only the rhythms. We are only emphasizing the rhythms here because of the prominence of the clave in Pura Alegria. Stirling High School, East London, South Africa Eddie composed Pura Alegria for the students in the brass ensemble at Stirling High School in East London, South Africa. The students prepared it as part of a presentation and Eddie was honored to contribute something for them to work on and perform. The request came from Eddie’s good friend, Leonard Brandt. Leonard is a professional trumpet player in South Africa and also teaches applied brass at the high school. When Eddie was in South Africa for the jazz festival in Grahamstown (2016), Leonard arranged a personal performance of Pura Alegria for him in one of the empty classrooms. The composition was a smashing success and the students and the audience all enjoyed it! Skill Level When Eddie does a commission, he goes to great lengths to map out the skills of the individual players. Often times, his method’s skill levels don’t apply. Please keep in mind that skill levels in published music are not about how good the students are. Students will always have mixed skill sets. That’s part of what it means to be human. We are good at some things and bad at others. So the skills of the individual parts in Pura Alegria are varied, not only from part to part, but from skill to skill. That said, the highest note in the first trumpet part is written high C, and the rhythms are syncopated (because of the clave influence). We would put most of that first part in our Trumpet Pro skill level. The highest note in the second part is written A above the staff. The highest note in the third trumpet part is top line F. Practice Recommendations Pay special attention to the articulations, which can feel a little awkward, but really make the piece. Sometimes the eighth-notes are long and the quarter-notes are short. Other times the quarter-notes are long and the eighth-notes are short. Also be careful with the dynamics. There will be a tendency to play the entire piece too loud. Because it feels like that kind of piece. However, if you play it that way, it will ruin some of the compositional effects. This is especially true for the keyboard. If you are performing with a keyboard, not an acoustic piano, then what’s the amplification that it doesn’t bury the rest of the ensemble. You cannot have the keyboard set to the same volume as you would for a full jazz ensemble class. Other than that, have fun with this piece. The name, Pura Alegria, in English means Pure Joy! The rhythms are delightful and the melodies are infectious.

She told me about her daughter, Rachel, who was born with two extremely rare diseases. The first is  Subcortical Band Heterotopia.  The other is Lennox Gastaut Syndrome.  The latter, likely consequential to the first, is the more lethal of the two, as it causes severe seizures and is not controlled for long by drugs.  The first, the most devastating and life-affecting is characterized by abnormal brain development which causes this delightful young woman of 25 to be locked in the brain of a pre-pubescent child or younger.Dad has left, and his legal obligation to child support ended in 2019.  In NJ, disability, no matter how severe, only extends the legal child support obligation to age 23.  Of course child support payments cannot possibly fulfill or replace the financial, emotional and moral support needed to care for a child without such severe disability.  How much less when the child has such severe disabilities.All proceeds from sales of this song, including licensing and royalties, will be gifted to Rachel's Mom until 31 December 2032 or ten years after Rachel's decease, whichever is later.

One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include My Faith Looks Up to Thee, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, and Nearer, My God, to Thee.

Published by Daniel Hay Music (A0.596412). Probably the first composition the composer, Daniel Hay, created is the piece The Hermit for Oboe and Strings. This bass clef arrangement is the melody from that piece. It was an experiment in modified 12-tone music structure. A friend from his years in Junior High School provided the melody concept. Many years later The Hermit was one of many compositions lost during Hurricane Katrina. The original score had been recovered because it had been sent to the composer's friend. In the piece, the hermit is represented by the solo instrument, and society is represented by the strings. This solo version can be played by most bass clef instruments although it was first expressed as an Oboe and the attached mp3 is voiced as Bassoon. The linked YouTube file is in Oboe voicing.

Excerpts of this piece are included in Benny Sluchin’s book on contemporary trombone excerpts. This work includes my invention of the idea of playing lip multiphonics. Here's the story. During the Spring of 1985, I participated in the l'atelier de recherche instrumental department for acoustic instrument exploration at IRCAM working with Pierre-Yves Artaud (flute), Daniel Kientzy (saxophone) and Benny Sluchin (trombone). Most of the research was based on looking at new ways to produce sound with acoustic instruments and the department was open to performers and composers. A few months after the IRCAM workshops Benny Sluchin and I decided to work on a piece for him. We worked together to explore various contemporary techniques which I might select for the piece. After a while I narrowed down my choices to a movement with air, one with lip multiphonics, and one using the spatial characteristics of the bell, singing, and sending sound out the back by an alternate F tube. Benny is great to work with as he’s a wonderful musician, anything is possible, he’s open to trying out new ideas and he’s a great human being. The perfect combination for a composer. First, about the lip multiphonics in the second movement. During one of our work sessions we looked at singing and playing multiphonics but I wanted something different. So I asked Benny what would happen if he placed his embouchure between two partials of the overtone series. The result was amazing!! A number of partials sounded at the same time and the textural colors were varied and beautiful. The only problem with this was the window for placing the embouchure was very narrow. Slightly too high or slightly too low would result in a terribly out of tune and uncentered partial. Reminded me of what a sick cow might sound like. This difficulty was less pronounced between partials of a fifth but became more difficult when the partials were closer together. Fourths were okay but major and minor third partials were extremely difficult and risky. We decided what the heck and I wrote the second movement knowing the risks. But when the embouchure is well placed it produces such a beautiful sound. Benny mentioned that the idea had a pedagogical side benefit. He said from being able to focus on placing the embouchure in such a limited ‘window’ it made placing the embouchure for normal note much easier. My invention has been used by other composers since including Xenakis in 1986 and an Icelandic composer a couple of years later. The alternate movement come about after Benny had played the piece for a couple of years. He’s able to get these multiphonics but realized that maybe there would not be many other players able to do so. To avoid the problem that this movement might scare players away from the piece we decided that it would be good to have an alternate movement which would use the same ideas but in a less stressful way for the performer. I thought this was a good idea and wrote, what for me, is a more meditative piece based on the same material. I also imagined that it could be played by itself if the player wished. There is a misprint in the score at the end of the first line where there appears a multiphonic based on placing the embouchure between an Eb and an A natural. The A should be an Ab. The first movement explores the subtleties of various vowel and consonant formations in the mouth while playing. Since the trombone is such a perfect amplifier these small details can be heard. For instance the difference between ‘ts’ and ‘tsh’ comes off well. I think of this movement as a vocal conversation or discourse which becomes highly animated at the end. The dynamics play an important role in providing additional colors. The player should really ‘speak’ without speaking for this movement to work. The third movement is my circus piece.
