By YO YO MA and Kathryn Stott. By Sergei Rachmaninoff. Arranged by Flavio Regis Cunha. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Instructional. 8 pages. Flavio Regis Cunha #6669111. Published by Flavio Regis Cunha (A0.601828).

Rachmaninoff: Zdes' Khorosho, Op. 21, No. 7 (as played by Yo Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott) ARRANGED for VIOLIN and Piano.

___________________________________________

ЗдеÑÑŒ хорошо (Zdes' khorosho, How nice is here) was written in April 1902, in a sweet moment in the composer's life: he had overcome a creative block and had just married his cousin Natalia Sarina. Zdes' khorosho is n. 7 from Twelve Romances, op. 21, a beautiful song that talks about the bond between man, nature and God. It’s also a love song; One of the things I like the most is the balance between contemplation and passion that Rachmaninov accomplishes. The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts.
Songs of Comfort and Hope
is inspired by the series of recorded-at-home musical offerings that Ma began sharing in the first days of the COVID-19 lockdown in the United States. Over the course of the last year, Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsofComfort grew from a self-shot video of Antonín Dvořák’s Goin’ Home into a worldwide effort that has reached more than 20 million people. Ma and Stott marked the next chapter in the project with this album, offering consolation and connection in the face of fear and isolation. The album includes 21 new recordings, which span modern arrangements of traditional folk tunes, canonical pop songs, jazz standards, and mainstays from the western classical repertoire.

By Robert Schumann and Yo Yo Ma. By Robert Schumann. Arranged by Flavio Regis Cunha. Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 16 pages. Flavio Regis Cunha #6074553. Published by Flavio Regis Cunha (A0.597444).

Vanitas is a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, often contrasting symbols of wealth and symbols of ephemerality and death. Best-known are vanitas still lifes, a common genre in Low countries of the 16th and 17th centuries; they have also been created at other times and in other media and genres.

The Latin noun vanitas (from the Latin adjective vanus 'empty') means 'emptiness', 'futility', or 'worthlessness', the traditional Christian view being that earthly goods and pursuits are transient and worthless. It alludes to Ecclesiastes 1:2; 12:8, where vanitas translates the Hebrew word hevel, which also includes the concept of transitoriness.

The first movement of the composer Robert Schumann's 5 Pieces in a Folk Style, for Cello and Piano, Op. 102 is entitled Vanitas vanitatum: Mit Humor.

The arrangement we present here is a very close transcription of Yo Yo Ma's interpretation with pianist Kathryn Stott, recorded on the album Songs from the Arc of Life.

Original Ad libitum violin part was included.

Après un rêve (Op. 7, No. 1) for cello and piano (as played by Yo Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott

Trois mélodies is a set of mélodies for solo voice and piano, by Gabriel Fauré. It consists of Après un rêve (Op. 7, No. 1), one of Faure's most popular vocal pieces, Hymne (Op. 7, No. 2), and Barcarolle (Op. 7, No. 3). The songs were written between 1870 and 1877, and published in 1878. They were not, however, originally conceived together as a set of three; the opus number 7 was imposed on them retrospectively in the 1890s, almost 20 years after their first publications.[citation needed]

Après un rêve
In Après un rêve (After a dream), a dream of romantic flight with a lover, away from the earth and towards the light, is described. However, upon awakening, the dreamer longs to return to the mysterious night and the ecstatic falsehood of his dream. The text of the poem is an anonymous Italian poem freely adapted into French by Romain Bussine.

Composed by Kristian S Rodriguez. 20th Century,Contemporary,Latin. 10 pages. Kristian S. Rodriguez #5191599. Published by Kristian S. Rodriguez (A0.1023338).

I composed this piece as part of a larger song cycle, Colores mexicanos, which I wrote as part of an undergraduate thesis, Colores mexicanos: The Mexican Art Song and Setting Mexican Texts to Music (2016). This cycle explores various texts from various perspectives throughout Mexican history, culture, and society, while reflecting influences from Mexican folk and academic music within the composition.
Si yo nunca... is the second piece in the cycle, and like the first, it features text from the Cantares mexicanos, written by Mexica authors during the beginning of the Spanish viceroyalty period in the 16th century. This text uses vague, abstract language to emphasize the idea that human culture never truly disappears, and it’s fitting for a state freshly defeated by another civilization. The musical setting features the Andulusian cadence, a compositional device frequently used in Latin American music, distorted across various octaves and in various figures, as the singer suggests that there is more after death, a fitting metaphor for an ancient yet very active culture that still pervades Mexican society today.

Composed by Anonymous. Arranged by Ian D. Crew. Christmas,Classical,Concert,Renaissance,Standards. Score and parts. 30 pages. Grumpy Mule Music #5989289. Published by Grumpy Mule Music (A0.949135).

Yo me soy la morenica is the third piece in the suite 'A Renaissance Christmas for Brass', a collection of four villancicos from the Spanish Renaissance. The villancico is now synonymous with the Christmas carol and this selection has been arranged in a lively, idiomatic way for Flexible Brass Quartet. (The complete suite is available here, as are the other three pieces as separate items.) Parts are provided for almost any combination of brass instruments, together with a keyboard part for support, making this a highly flexible resource for both performers and teachers, full of warmth, joy, and seasonal cheer. ¡Feliz Navidad!
