O'Connor learned this tune from fiddling legend Benny Thomasson at an early age. Thomasson developed the parts of the tune as incorporated here. O'Connor and Meyer then completed the arrangement with understated counterpoint lines. The result is an old-time fiddle tune with a classical charm. Chief Sitting In The Rain, also known as Chief Sitting Bull has the distinction of being the first piece the trio played in public. Immediately following their first rehearsal, Ma and Meyer stopped by O'Connor's class of students at Vanderbilt University and ended up playing the new music. The piece was one of the stand-out cuts, receiving a wide variety of radio play, and bringing the trio’s music to new audiences. Written originally for the mandolin, it surely is one of O’Connor’s most memorable mandolin melodies. With the aid of Edgar Meyer arranging the fabulous cello and bass solo sections, the piece can be performed in a variety of instrumental settings. The mandolin part could be also covered by guitar, piano, harp or most any chordal instrument. The piece was named by a young music student at an inner-city camp for underprivileged youths. At his workshop, O’Connor performed his new piece on the mandolin and asked for the kids to help him name it. The title, Butterfly’s Day Out, helped O’Connor complete his vision for the tune. The whole experience also inspired the idea for O’Connor to start his own Fiddle Camps.
