Appalachia Waltz MO104D

Appalachia Waltz adapted for three violins by Mark O’Connor

Violin 3 Part (score and parts available)

Music by Mark O’Connor

2 pages - 5:40 minutes in length

Appalachia Waltz by Mark O’Connor is the title track from the album featuring O’Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, and Edgar Meyer. The Sony Classical release debuted and then stayed for several months at the No.1 position on Billboard Magazine’s Classical music chart. O’Connor originally composed the piece as a solo for unaccompanied violin in 1993. For the recording with Ma in 1996, O’Connor and Meyer re-arranged the waltz for violin, cello and doublebass. As it currently appears in this manuscript, O’Connor adapts the instrumentation for three violins. Appalachia Waltz might well be one of Mark O’Connor’s most-loved compositions. It utilizes musical inspiration from Scandinavian and Appalachian folk fiddling, while crafted into a classical music setting. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.

Chief Sitting In The Rain (viola part – vln, vla, cel) MO114B

Viola Part (score and parts available)

Music by Mark O’Connor

2 pages - 2:00 minutes in length

Chief Sitting In The Rain adapted for violin, viola and cello is a traditional fiddle tune that Mark O'Connor and Edgar Meyer arranged for their album with Yo-Yo Ma entitled Appalachia Waltz. O'Connor learned this tune from fiddling legend Benny Thomasson at an early age. Thomasson developed the parts of the tune as incorporated here. O'Connor and Meyer then completed the arrangement with understated counterpoint lines. The result is an old-time fiddle tune with a classical charm. Chief Sitting In The Rain, also known as Chief Sitting Bull has the distinction of being the first piece the trio played in public. Immediately following their first rehearsal, Ma and Meyer stopped by O'Connor's class of students at Vanderbilt University and ended up playing the new music. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.

Butterfly’s Day Out adapted for mandolin/misc. instr., viola and cello by O’Connor is on the album Appalachia Waltz featuring Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer. The piece was one of the stand-out cuts, receiving a wide variety of radio play, and bringing the trio’s music to new audiences. Written originally for the mandolin, it surely is one of O’Connor’s most memorable mandolin melodies. With the aid of Edgar Meyer arranging the fabulous cello and bass solo sections, the piece can be performed in a variety of instrumental settings. The mandolin part could be also covered by guitar, piano, harp or most any chordal instrument. The piece was named by a young music student at an inner-city camp for underprivileged youths. At his workshop, O’Connor performed his new piece on the mandolin and asked for the kids to help him name it. The title, Butterfly’s Day Out, helped O’Connor complete his vision for the tune. The whole experience also inspired the idea for O’Connor to start his own Fiddle Camps. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.

F. C.’s Jig for violin and cello is from the album Appalachia Waltz which features Mark O’Connor and Yo-Yo Ma playing the jig. O’Connor utilized the third movement of his Fiddle Concerto and arranged from it a violin and cello duet. The result is thrilling - a virtuoso duet full of melody, interplay and energy, pushing both instruments all the way to its conclusion. F. C.’s Jig is a spirited, well known derivation of the Fiddle Concerto’s jig. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.

Salut D'Amour (Liebesgruss) for Violoncello and Piano - as played by YO YO MA and Kathryn Stott.

Edward Elgar’s Salut d’amour is one of those pieces by the British composer that has a particularly haunting melody. Composed in 1888 for his future wife Caroline Alice Roberts, the work became an enormous success early on. There are numerous arrangements – but the only versions for which the autograph manuscripts survive are those for Violin and Piano, Piano solo and Violoncello and Piano. Up to now there has only been an arrangement of the cello part made by the original publisher, presumably with Elgar’s approval. This score was written based on the beautiful record 'Songs of the Arc of Life' by YO YO MA (cello) and Kathryn Stott (piano). Enjoy!

Old Country Fairy Tale adapted for violin, viola and cello is a composition by Mark O’Connor that appears on the recording Appalachia Waltz featuring Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer. The Sony Classical release was voted by People Magazine as one of the top ten albums in all musical categories in 1996. O’Connor scored the original recording of Old Country Fairy Tale to include doublebass. Here, he has adapted the instrumentation to call for violin, viola and cello for improved playability. The composition features O’Connor’s beautiful melodic phrases dynamically ushered into the classic setting. His theme for Old Country Fairy Tale undergoes a development of three different dance traditions found in fiddle music– the Hornpipe, Waltz and Jig,– which in broad terms, presents a unique version of a fiddle contest round. New music with an old spirit. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.

When Bidden To The Wake Or Fair for violin and cello is a Mark O’Connor arrangement of an old song from Irish musician William Shield. The arrangement was composed for the album Liberty! and performed with guest cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The piece was used throughout the PBS series Liberty! The American Revolution. By now, O’Connor says, we know how to blend our different styles so at times in this duet you can’t tell which is the classical cello and which is the folk fiddle. It becomes one sound. Liberty! album notes author Thomas Fleming says, it is also a unique sound, sweeter and more provocative than a human voice. The music is suited for all levels.
