Published by Gordon Jackson (A0.1017672). 174Turlough Ó Carolan (1670-1738) was an Irish harper and composer. Carolan’s music does not sit comfortably in any one particular musical tradition. He was the product of a long line of Irish harpers dating from medieval times or before. He was also aware of Irish folk music, with many of his tunes having a ‘trad’ quality, particularly in his jig-like compositions. Finally, Carolan was influenced by the music of Italian Baroque composers that he would have heard played at the great houses he visited. Carolan’s Draught is an example of the latter.The rather prosaically titled ‘174’ is simply the result of the air’s original name being lost in the mists of time, and Donal O’Sullivan, in his Carolan: The Life Times and Music of an Irish Harper [sic.] allocated numbers to the tunes that had no titles (171-180). I have arranged this primarily for solo mandolin, although I’m sure it can be adapted for other instruments. The piece is played three times through: first, the basic unadorned melody; second, with just a few simple double stops and open strings; third, a fully-realised romp with many, often quite tricky, double stops (and open strings, of course, but they’re pretty easy!). I’ve added guitar chords above the staff (letter names only), not that it necessarily needs further accompaniment. The melody is so heavily arpeggiated the chords more or less wrote themselves. A word of warning – easily discovered for yourselves, really – beware of attempting to play this too fast lest those runs of quavers (16th notes) catch you unawares!

This is a loop station composition for electric violin that I composed for my live-looping duo, The Khromatiks, in 2013. Doing my part to increase the available repertoire for extended range violins out here on the internet!I originally recorded this tune on a 7-string electric violin with a Boss RC-30 loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 2 separate tracks or sections with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, Boomerang III, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you use an octave pedal to record the low bass lines. A standard 4-string can also work, although some phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: the head melody is a basic lydian dominant motif that gets displaced forwards or backwards by a sixteenth note on each iteration. In Nashville Number System, we call this sort of syncopation a push, which inspired the title. This idea transitions into a B solo section with a latin songo groove. This is a great tune for practicing tight rhythmic syncopation, or for developing solo ideas on modal scales!With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. If you have a looper capable of syncing to a click track, you could also try adding bass (plays the bottom line of loop 2 only) or guitar/keyboards (read the chord symbols as a lead-sheet). This measure is a good example of how to squeeze in a quick blues note.I like these versions because you can choose between playing the main melody, playing the chords, or trying both simultaneously. If you can eventually playing both simultanously, it can quickly become sophisticated sounding!This version is also nice in that if you strum the more detail-oriented guitar chords, you end up usually playing the melody anyways, which makes this more ideal for strumming with a pick and for practicing vocals.Tips:1. The F# diminshed chord in measure 18 was originally a D7 chord. This seems like a good substitute to make because they contain roughly the same notes but the diminished chord is more original sounding and has better part writing. There is something about D7 chord that I am always swapping out of them when the melody is low. Same concept for the D/F# chord in measure 11. Instead of a famous D chord, the D/F# accents the main melody better, and is more unique sounding.2. It's easy to make mistakes with ties, especially because they also look like slurs. Ties add the to rhythm values together and you don't play the second note, so I normally cross them out with a pencil as they are really only showing sustain.

BUT…if you have 2 flutes, oboe, 2 clarinets and a bassoon or bass clarinet, there are some really nice moments in this piece to feature them. This arrangement is in the Key of D. This would serve as a powerfully worshipful offertory or as a special moment in any style service. A standard 4-string can also work, although some phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: a Haiku is characterized by a pattern of 5-7-5 syllables, and in this piece that refers to the meters used in each of the overarching sections. The ambient intro in 5/8 involves a quartal ostinato with long sweeping volume swells, which then develops into a pizzicato groove in 7/8. This groove forms the basis for the majority of the tune, as melodies & improvised solos drift in and out over an A and B section loop. On the final B section, the loop drops out and the violinist builds up into a more distorted strum bowing groove (which accompanies a drum solo on the original recording). As the intensity builds, the 7/8 groove is shortened back into 5/8, thus completing the Haiku. The piece ends with a restatement of the original ostinato as it fades into silence using an automated volume fade on the looper pedal.With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo.
