After his death, the members of the Beatles brought out a version as a single in 1996 which quickly won a gold record and reached number 4 in the UK Charts, and number 11 in USA.Younger players may be more familiar with the Tom Odell cover of this lovely song, chosen as the John Lewis Christmas Advert Music in 2014.Although I arranged this for Capriccio Quartet who play professionally at weddings and other events, I am marketing it for the Intermediate category. The slow speed and easy key for strings make this an enjoyable song for younger players. As usual, most of my double stopping includes an open string, or a note that can be left out if it is easier. The opening cello melody can be dropped an octave without going below the low viola bass notes. Likewise the first violin can drop the octave at bars 24/25 and also at bars 36/37.Take as many bows as make you comfortable. My bowing is only a guide. Perhaps the octave leaps are difficult to slur effectively. I suggest just playing the higher or lower octave as gentle quavers.I hope you have fun playing this song. This is another in a series of works for the younger or less experienced instrumentalist, with a limited range, easy rhythms, and an easily playable organ part that provides great support to the young player. In addition to the trombone and organ parts, there is a treble clef part provided that can be used by a trumpet, baritone, or tenor sax player. It was written and recorded on a two manual instrument, with the composer playing both parts (thanks to the organ's MIDI recorder). I hope you will feature the younger players in your church!

This work for trombone and organ is part of the 2024 Suite for Trombone and Organ, which is geared toward the younger, less experienced player, with works that can be performed at church services and other occasions.  Dido's Lament, from Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas is a lyrical, somber piece, giving the younger player the chance to develop phrasing and legato playing.  The emotional mood of this makes it perfect during reflective times of a service, especially during the Lenten season.  The range is one that a typical high school player (or advanced middle schooler) could play, with rhythms well within the reach of players at that level.  The solo part is well-supported by the organ part, with hopes that rehearsals can be minimal in putting this together for performance.  There are two other movements to this 2024 Suite, both available on this site as well.  Please give that young musician the chance to shine!  Also included is a treble clef part that could be played by trumpet, treble clef baritone, or tenor sax.

With tutti syncopation and lots of flourishes, the band will be able to express the joy of spring as fountains in the park start up again.Woodwinds—Only the clarinet part is split throughout. The alto sax has a couple of split measures to reinforce the trills but supports the horn line for the rest of the march. The tenor sax supports the horn part when the altos have the trills. The ranges are within most 1st-year players and easily within 2nd-year players range. The 2nd Clarinet never goes above the break. The trills for all woodwinds (fountains) are easy trills for younger players.Brass—Only the trumpet part is split and it is rhythmically unison throughout. Low brass/woodwinds are mostly entirely unison throughout the piece. Like the WW’s, all parts are playable by 1st-year players. Percussion uses a standard concert march instrumentation. The 16th century tune Es ist ein Ros entsprungen is popular at Christmas, known as Lo, how a rose e'er blooming, A great and mighty wonder, and other texts.  This arrangement is another written to feature a younger instrumentalist in your Christmas services.  Parts for trombone, baritone, and trumpet are included, and other instrument transpotitions can be arranged by contacting the composer.  I've used the feeling of A great and mighty wonder for this, since a faster tempo normally works better for a young musician.  An experieced played can easily handle this as a slower tempo, reminiscent of Lo, how a rose e'er blooming.  There are three other suites with traditional hymns and original works, under the titles of 2020, 2021, and 2022 Suites for Trombone and Organ.  I hope you will give some younger players the chance to shine!
