The harmonic language is largely diatonic and relies largely on bouncy rhythmic interplay and dynamics for forward momentum, although there are some forays into dissonance and distant key centres. The mood is wistful but optimistic and fun. This selection, For Unto Us a Child is Born, from George Frideric Handel's world-famous oratorio, Messiah, would be an excellent addition to any music library. Originally written for a four-part chorus accompanied by a small orchestra, this selection has been arranged for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, by Regis Bookshar, without losing any of the vitality of the original version. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement will entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come. It is perfect for Christmas concerts and church services, is suitable for high school, college and professional performers and is one of my all-time favorite arrangements. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1076424). Matty Groves is a variant of the English folk song sometimes called Little Musgrave. While the lyrics of the song are rather risqué, dealing with an affair between the local lord's wife and a commoner from the town, the tune is quite lively and fun to listen to. Matty Groves is well attested to in folk song literature going back at least as far as the early 1700s if not earlier. It is most well known now because of the British folk rock group Fairport Convention. This version is arranged by Mark Lewis for Bb clarinet quartet. All four players get a turn with the melody, harmony, and accompaniment parts and the verses are separated by a short interlude with an original melody. The rhythms and fingerings are not too difficult but the melody does cover a fairly large range so it may a challenge for younger players. However, almost all intermediate and even some advanced middle school players should be able to play this fun little piece.

This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for an Alto Saxophone Octet. Three Alto Saxophones play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other five.Alto Saxophones. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (36 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar which are also available. There are quite a few other arrangements in a variety of styles and I'm certain you will find something else which might interest you as well. The idea of 'Progress' in art is fallacious (within reason).  Scheidt- Variations on Wehe, Windgen, wehe (Blow Little Winds, Blow) [1624, Halle]  This gem of mid-Baroque German meister Sam Scheidt, who (for reference) was 23 yrs. younger than Shakespeare and 98 yrs. than Bach, sounds not-a-bit strange to today's ears. Donald J. (no, not him) Grout says that John Dowland's songs of 1590's sound entirely modern. Well, they do! STING recorded them, if that means anything to you. So then, what have composers been up to for the last 430 years?!  I jest, but this piece is terrific. Be advised, the 'runs' are modal, in that the 7th degree is usually NOT just a semitone under the 8th/1st, but a whole tone. A bit like bagpipe music, in our day.
