Not too difficult, probably intermediate level, though there's a mini run of sixteenth triplets in left hand at one point that might be difficult. This is an original composition I made when I was younger and I've polished it up a little. I recommend playing with a pedal and using dynamic phrasing as you go up and down the runs. Some directors may prefer to use one electric bass in place of the entire acoustic bass section.  Students will need to learn the concept of swinging the eight notes as noted at the top of the score. Ranges are comfortable and mostly in first position allowing for younger players to manage this nicely.  The piano and drums parts are optional but will add greatly to the jazz flavor.

This piece was written at the request of the wife of the Musical Director of the Thanet Chamber Choir as a surprise for her husband's 40th birthday.  The brief was either an anthem or some special arrangement of Happy Birthday.  Well, using words from Pliny (the Younger?) and a very disguised version of the latter, I arrived at the attached.  The MP3 was recorded by individuals at home during the second COVID lockdown and put together to be played on his birthday.  If you are looking for something more than the usual, either as a birthday treat or a concert guess the tune item, this could be for your choir.  All well within the range of any competent choir and with just one optional split (for any second basses).

He also composed brilliant, virtuoso pieces and his motet-like anthem, Sing Joyfully, a polyphonic setting of Psalm 81, written in 1590, is perhaps his best-known one.  It is enchanting to listen to and is fun to sing. Regis Bookshar thought that instrumental performers should have the same opportunity that singers have had for years, so he has now transcribed, edited and arranged this wonderful composition for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles, including this one for a Brass Sextet, consisting of 2 Bb Trumpets, 1 French Horn and 3 Trombones.Since no tempo is indicated and there are no written dynamic or phrase markings in William Byrd's original score, Regis Bookshar has taken the liberty to add them in order to provide direction and life to the piece.
