Locke’s Theatre, an orchestral work in three short movements, takes as its departure point incidental music written for Shakespeare’s The Tempest by the seventeenth-century English composer Matthew Locke. Aspects of Locke’s idiosyncratic and daringly advanced harmonic and rhythmic language were to be adopted (some might say perfected) by his younger friend and protégé Henry Purcell. But it is the very rawness and directness of Locke’s theatre music that I wished to acknowledge and emulate. In each of my work's three movements – entitled respectively ‘The First Music’, ‘Rustic Music’, and ‘Curtain Music (with Storm)’ – the baroque originals, though very often submerged, remain a constant, shadowy presence. It is a moderate level arrangement designed to appeal to community or student choirs. There are a couple of references in the song that may make it unsuitable for younger choirs so please check the lyrics beforehand if you are unsure!

This is the 2nd (proper) string trio which is for the weddings, cocktails, etc. The first movement was based on a question I would ask my younger self in a dream I had where do you angels go? The second movement is based off of the feeling of a good night of sleep which is rare for me much like playing in the key of B flat is. The third movement is a scherzo which starts of wacky but quickly mitigates into happy ending. Finally the last movement is the capturing of seeing the sunrise and sunset after many days of grey and gloom. There is a fragment of Here Comes the Sun which is subtle. This movement being in A major gives the listener the sonority of happiness and joy.
