B-Flat Clarinet,Bassoon,Flute,Oboe,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1248306

By Yuan-Chen Li. By Yuan-Chen Li. Arranged by Yuan-Chen Li. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Multicultural,World. 62 pages. Yuan-Chen Li #842845. Published by Yuan-Chen Li (A0.1248306).

Set for 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 B-flat clarinet, 1 bassoon, and piano, Yuan-Chen Li's 8-minute long wind and piano quinetet Butterfly was commissioned by Norfolk Chamber Music Festival (Norfolk Connecticut, 2007) of Yale University School of Music, and premiered by the parcipant musicians of the workshop, and subsquently received its New York premiere in IMANI Winds' summer chamber music festival (2012). In the first and second movements, the music emulates the movement of butterfly’s flying and the delightful spirit of the spring time. The last movement lends itself to a poetic moment, evoking the sense of the transformation of butterfly’s life and its beautifulness. Musicians would be surprised by the intricate rhythms, unpredictable move across the mode, whistletone, and witty interaction among performing partners.

(The document includes parts for each of the wind player; the pianist reads from the full score)

“Tien Hey Hey†(Dark Day) is one of the most popular folk tunes in Ming-Nan speaking community in Taiwan. It describes a couple find a loach when plowing in the farm during a raining day. When they prepare to cook it, they fight over whether to season it with salt or sweeten it up but accidentally breaking the cooking pot. The song of this witty folklore became the basic materials as well as the inspiration for the newly composed “Rain Noir Noir†to depict the scene of rain drops, plowing, and the fight.

Set for one Harp, one flute, and one cello, the work was composed for the harpist Liya Huang, the principal harpist of China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, and is included in her first recording album “Harpy Lab, A Collection of Harp Compositions by Contemporary Taiwanese Composers,†commercially released in March 2018.

Program Note:

Without any prior musical idea, the genesis of this chamber work starts from the title “Aldebaranâ€. It means “the followerâ€, and in the real world a bright star as the eye of the zodiac constellation of Taurus is so titled. Then I ponder if I need a fixed sonority to symbolize this star and put in some materials to follow with it. Consequently, what became rather important to me in the philosophy of this composition is the condition or state of wandering between the act of proceeding forward and the ever-changing perspective of the object due to the various contexts of time and space created within it – thereby constituting the relation between the “star†and the discourse situated beneath it. Therefore, where am I relative to the star?

Written for eighth blackbird, Aldebaran is premiered on May 10th 2013 in Fulton Hall, University of Chicago.

Hakka is identified as the common theme running through three pieces for solo clarinet, and clarinet and piano duet, written for students of beginner, intermediate, and intermediate/advanced levels: Singing in the Hakka Village, Mountain Dance, and Song of Soaring Mountains. It takes students to expand simple elements into examples of expression by employing changes in dynamics, tempos, and ornaments. The tune by the ethnic group Hakka is rooted in triadic arpeggiations. Supplied with techniques such as call and response, tempo modulations, and extreme register shifts, one shall recognize these techniques meant to depict not only the geographical features where the Hakka villages often situate but also practices in Chinese traditional music and contemporary music.

Composed by Yuan-Chen Li (Taiwan). Concert,Contemporary,World. Individual part. 9 pages. Yuan-Chen Li #3447121. Published by Yuan-Chen Li (A0.926736).

Spell (aka. Ling, 凌), for solo Alto Saxophone, is commissioned by Taiwanese saxophonist Chun-Hao Ku (顧鈞豪) for his performance in International Saxophone Congress in 2012. The inspiration of Spell is by one of the Taiwan Taoist rituals – Chi Ji (起乩): it refers to a ritualistic process conducted by the Taoist priest who transforms himself from an ordinary person to the one full of the spirit of divinity, and then delivers messages to the prayers. The form of this piece is shaped by two simultaneous voices which project the dual identities between the chant of the priest and the spell transcended from the spirit. Each voice focuses on distinct articulations and techniques developing in the flow of time, such as slap-tongue pizzicato, churning broken chord, and multiphonics.

Spell is included in the saxophone repertoire Londeix Guide To The Saxophone Repertoire, 1844-2012 edited by Jean-Marie Londeix (2012, Bordeaux, France).
