I’ve always been intimidated by percussion music, and forcing myself to write a piece I’m proud of for percussion has been a journey worth taking. The name comes from the zombies mode in Call of Duty: Cold War. When you “pack-a-punch� the Bullfrog (making it deal more damage) the name changes to “High Anxiety,� which this piece gives me. The harmonies in the marimba are based on an A fully diminished 7th chord, which is a chord with a lot of tension and no resolution.

A Study in Symbols is a piano solo arrangement of the 1901 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano.  I have turned this piece into a Charleston dance, inspired by the original Charleston song which created this genre.  I have taken the Jacobs-Bond simple 8 bar chromatic theme, altered the rhythm, and embedded it into the chords of my own opening chorus theme.   Everything else I totally made up to create my Charleston in true 1920's style.  This includes a new contrasting B theme in the relative minor key for the verse.  The song is in ABA format with a repeat.  Full of energy and history, and great fun to play, this piece works for dance, pleasure, or a showstopping concert encore.  3 page score; 2:10 minutesThis piece is also found in my book, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Popular Songs 1900-1925, a collection of 53 of her songs I have arranged for piano solo, which is also available on this site.
