Jacques Dussouil was the Titular Organist of the Grand Orgue Boisseau of Notre-Dame de Royan from 1966 until his death in 2016. During his studies at the High School of Poitiers, he was also the student of pianist Hélène d’Ambelle who was herself a student of the great French Pianist Alfred Cortot. It was his work with Jean-Albert Villard, the organist of the Cliquot organ of the Cathedral of Poitiers which would determine his vocation as an organist. Jacques Dussouil continued his studies in Paris with Noëlie Pierront and especially with Edouard Souberbielle

His duties at the Royan Cathedral lead him to also become a choral director and composer, founding one of the best Cathedral Choirs in France which he directed for many years. This activity lead to the compostion of a large number of sacred works, including his Mass in D for two organs and Chorus.

Wynwood Walls draws on 9 artworks which lend their titles to the 9 connected sections of the quintet. The music reflects and amplifies my own subjective responses to the artworks.

The movements are organised in pairs, circling out from a still centre – No Woman, No Cry. The title for this centrepiece comes from Chris Ofili’s moving portrait of Doreen Lawrence, the mother of a teenager murdered in an unprovoked racist attack. As well as this specific reference, the artist intended the painting to be read as a universal portrayal of melancholy, solace, and grief. The two segments flanking No Woman, No Cry complete the central triptych. Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks explores loneliness and isolation, while Grayson Perry’s #Lamentation is a meditation on remembrance and the transience of life. In contrast to the rest of Wynwood Walls, the music here is dark and introspective.

I want my time with you is a giant neon sign designed by Tracey Emin for St. Pancras Station, London. Selfie with Sunflowers is an essay written by Julian Barnes about our over-familiarisation with Van Gogh’s iconic sunflower paintings. The music is sentimental, bordering on schmaltz and kitsch. Sunflower Seeds and Infinity Room are a pair of moto perpetuo scherzos inspired by the minimalist installations of Ai Weiwei and Yayoi Kusama respectively. The opening section, Bathers at Asnières, suggests Seurat’s iconic painting, while the finale, Seurat’s Bathers, evokes Howard Hodgkin’s reworking of the Seurat using a blaze of vivid colours.

The title of the quintet is borrowed from the Wynwood art district of Miami – an area characterised by the hundreds of colourful street murals which decorate the walls of old warehouses in the neighbourhood. In performance, the artworks can be projected onto a screen behind the ensemble.

Pierre-Claude-François BOUILLON (18??-1883) was the principal conductor of the Cirque Fernando, the famous circus of the Belle Époque who inspired many impressionist artists, such as Renoir, Degas, Toulouse-Latrec and Georges Seurrat, whose masterpiece “Le Cirque†was inspired by this Circus. Bouillon was a very prolific compposer, writing many works for solo instrument and piano, marches, galops, waltzs, polkas and other dances. These works were intended to illustrate the various numbers presented during performances..

L'Oiseau Mouche (“the Humming Birdâ€) is an extended fantasy in the form of a tryptiche. After an initial arioso and cadenza, there is an extended polka in A-B-A form. This is followed by a valse which begins as  a “valse-hésitation†but finished brilliantly.

I'm delighted to present my latest composition, the fruit of my growing passion for the violin! 

Just three weeks ago, I began this incredible musical adventure, discovering the subtleties of this fascinating instrument. Oh, how I love it already, despite the challenges it presents! 

Despite my short experience, I already had an irrepressible urge to create music. And so was born this original composition, based on just three modest notes on the violin. However, thanks to a more elaborate piano accompaniment, the piece comes to life and acquires a more captivating musical interest.

Il y a tout juste trois semaines, j'ai entamé cette incroyable aventure musicale en découvrant les subtilités de cet instrument fascinant. Oh, que je l'adore déjà, malgré les défis qu'il m'impose !

Malgré ma courte expérience, j'ai déjà une envie irrépressible de créer de la musique. C'est ainsi qu'est née cette composition originale, basée sur seulement trois modestes notes au violon. Cependant, grâce à un accompagnement plus élaboré au piano, la pièce prend vie et acquiert un intérêt musical plus captivant.

Non vorrei aprire quella porta ,Non dovrei…ma è il vento che mi porta…

E canto a voce bassa, Finchè il dolore passa

e giro, giro-tondo ,com’è cattivo il mondo

Tra pensieri e lacrime, Parole e musica

C’è la visione di Cassandra

E non so se potrà farcela, a scrivere di te ,Te ne sei andata in fretta ,

E sei perfetta Nella mente mia

 

Cassandra sta Rinchiusa in quella stanza, Si stringe a sé ,Racconta un’esistenza:

guarda là, mio padre e il suo bicchiere, guarda me, la vittima del bere

lividi viola, a scuola sempre sola ,nell’indifferenza continua la violenza ,

mia madre sapeva ma tutto nascondeva ,la mente che non regge , e il borderline distrugge

la scintilla che era in me, tutti quei sogni miei e quell’amore che non avrò mai,

vorrei scappare ma sto incatenata qua, rituali incontrollati, gesti ripetuti

ed un mostro chiuso dentro me

Nella visione di Cassandra, Non ha più sbarre questa stanza

non ha più un corpo, sesso ,è senza età

È una visione ma lei non lo sa

In armonia con il creato, Scorda il presente ed il passato

Ed il dolore affiora e sparirà ,È una visione ma lei non lo sa

Cassandra non lo sa, Che sta per perdere la nostra realtà

Fili sdruciti Di un pupazzo fragile

Rimane in bilico, Abbraccia un incubo

The underlying concept is that of dreaming.
The first section, Dreaming, which is static and meditative in character, is further divided into several parts, which, looking at the processes of dream narrative, present, in addition to the initial theme, short melodies of lyrical/melancholic character, ready to interrupt before reaching a possible development, to leave room for further suggestions.
The short themes are repeated several times, including in the final section, which is a reprise, condensed and varied from the first.
By contrast, the middle section, Nightmaring, has a strongly contrasting character to the preceding one, rhythmically marked and searchingly percussive, sardonic in the variety of figurations employed in the different registers of the instrument.
A technically intricate section that demands of the performer the choice of appropriate solutions, and closes with a frenetic accumulation of fragments. The most perturbing part of the dream.

Le concept sous-jacent est celui du rêve.
La première section, Dreaming, qui est statique et méditative par nature, est subdivisée en plusieurs parties qui, en examinant les processus narratifs du rêve, présentent, en plus du thème initial, de courtes mélodies d’un caractère lyrique/mélancolique, prêtes à s’interrompre avant d’atteindre un développement possible, pour laisser place à de nouvelles suggestions.
Les courts thèmes sont répétés plusieurs fois, y compris dans la section finale, qui est une reprise, condensée et variée par rapport à la première.
En revanche, la section centrale, Nightmaring, contraste fortement avec la précédente, marquée rythmiquement et percussive dans sa recherche, sarcastique dans la variété des figurations employées dans les différents registres de l’instrument.
Une section techniquement complexe qui demande au musicien de choisir des solutions appropriées, et qui se termine par une accumulation frénétique de fragments. La partie la plus troublante du rêve.

Sam Bateman a fait cet arrangement en 2012, quand il était toujours à l'école secondaire. (La terminale, pour être plus précis.) C'est un arrangement de l'un des œuvres les plus fameuses de Bach, pour un ensemble qui se compose d'un violon, une guitare et une guitare basse avec 5 cordes. (Si vous possédez pourtant la basse la plus commune avec 4 cordes, vous pouvez jouer quelconques notes qui sont écrites sous la corde mi, une octave plus hautes.)

C'est en fait une actualisation - l'arrangement original ne contient pas nuances, puisque Sam voulait rester fidèle à l'œuvre originale pour orgue. L'idée était pour que les musiciens eux-mêmes pourraient décider à quel fortement qu'ils joueraient. Il y n'avait pas legato dans l'arrangement original non plus, puisque, tandis que Sam savait por quoi legato est (pour couler les notes), il les savait surtout du piano - et parce que le piano est un instrument de clavier (et il manque une roue de tangage, contrairement au synthétiseur), un legato vrai est impossible, et c'est simplement émulé en jouant d'un tenuto sur plusieurs notes, alors Sam présumait à tort que le legato ne sois si important. Bien que Sam jouait le violon quand il était un enfant, il ne se souvient pas d'apprendre legato, et c'est seulement quand il a commencé à prendre des leçons de saxophone qu'il comprenait ce que legato signifie vraiment. En plus, le premier arrangement avait trop contre-mélodies dans les parties de la guitare et le violon, qui, dans cette version, sont soit enlevées, soit transférées à la partie de la basse, pour jouer plus facilement.

En tout cas, quand Sam a téléversé l'arrangement à YouTube, il a reçu beaucoup critique - et il a reçu conseil de plus de sa professeure d'arrangement - ainsi, il a pris les critiques et amélioré l'arrangement comme requis. Ainsi, voici la version nouvelle et améliorée de 2017. Profitez-en!
