L’éclaircie
: (independent track from the album Dive into Silence), is a piece of “Medita Music” (music designed for meditation). It symbolizes the awakening of the soul in a fundamental and stripped-down form.

This charming piano solo was first performed by its dedicatee, Jacques Leguerney’s good friend and muse Thérèse Cahen (1897-1944), in the Salle Debussy-Pleyel. They met around 1925. Cahen was the first person outside of his family to encourage his musical aspirations. For years, they met every Saturday to read through and discuss his music. She not only helped him with piano and harmony, but also performed his early chamber works, recruiting from her entourage to help him find high level interpreters for his music. Other early Leguerney works that she premiered included the Trio pour violon, violoncello et piano; the Sonatine pour flûte et piano; and two vocal chamber works presented by the Société Musicale Indépendente (S. M. I.), Epitaphe guerrière and Clair de lune for voice, flute and piano. Their friendship lasted until Cahen was deported from Paris on July 31, 1944, only a few weeks prior to the Liberation of Paris. Working with the Center of the Union Générale des Israélites de France in Saint-Mandé (a Parisian suburb), Thérèse Cahen had dedicated herself to the care of children of deported French parents. She left Paris with these children in the Convoy 77, and was taken to the gas chamber of Auschwitz. She left a letter for him, along with her grand piano, which remained in his apartment until his death.

It is impossible to write on this little page how much I have appreciated your kindness toward me for years and years, and how much happiness this has given me: there have been thousands of Saturdays, and I thought of them every day of the week. Probably you didn’t realize the influence you have had on me: it seems that my whole personality, my way of thinking and feeling has been transformed by you; it is a very deep imprint. If I am taken and in consequence you read this letter, tell yourself that I will continue to count the Saturdays in order to have an idea of the number of songs composed during my absence and that I will be delighted to hear them when I return. If I don’t return, I definitely want you to keep my piano but I don’t think it will happen and I say that I will see you soon.

Questa celebre Ave Maria risale molto probabilmente al XVI secolo ed è tradizionalmente attribuita al compositore franco-fiammingo Jacques (o Jacob) Arcadelt (1505-1568) che fu anche magister puerorum (cioè: direttore del coro delle voci bianche) e successivamente maestro del coro della Cappella Sistina in Roma. In realtà, questo brano – nella versione che noi conosciamo e con le parole del saluto angelico – fu edito per la prima volta nel 1842 da Pierre-Louis Philippe Dietsch (1808 - 1865), un oscuro e modesto compositore francese, che riprendeva la chanson profana a tre voci Nous voyons que les hommes, questa sì composta da Jacques Arcadelt per sole voci femminili ed apparsa per la prima volta a stampa nel 1554 in Tiers livre de chansons, nouvellement mises en musique à quatre, presso l’editore Le Roy & Ballard, in Parigi. La parte del basso, in particolare, è interamente lavoro di Dietsch che ne ha anche modificato l’assetto ritmico per adattarlo al nuovo testo, e ha aggiunto la cadenza plagale con la parola conclusiva Amen. Vari musicisti, in seguito, si sono cimentati sia nel modificare le linee di battuta, sia le durate di alcune note, sia la stessa divisione delle sillabe, per tentare  di correggere quello che è considerato lo stress della parola latina.

The piece Chronicles of Thamyris was written at the request of Greek guitarist Sotiris Athanasiou for his recording project with pieces based on Greek mythology.
I chose the myth of Thamyris who was a musician of Thracian origin. In each movement I imagined an episode of this myth. The first movement is composed as a narrative. The second, as the title indicates, is the episode of the competition between Thamyris and the Muses. In the third, according to the myth, Thamyris will become blind and will break his lyre. The last movement is an imaginary dance from his native Thrace.

La pièce «Chroniques de Thamyris» a été écrite à la demande du guitariste grec Sotiris Athanasiou pour son projet d’enregistrement avec des pièces basées sur la mythologie grecque.
J’ai choisi le mythe de Thamyris qui était un musicien d’origine Thrace. Dans chaque mouvement j’ai imaginé un épisode de ce mythe. Le premier mouvement est composé comme un narratif. Le deuxième comme le titre l’indique, est l’épisode de la compétition entre Thamyris et les Muses. Dans le troisième, selon le mythe,Thamyris va devenir aveugle et va briser sa lyre. Le dernier mouvement est une danse imaginaire de son pays natal la Thrace.

Orfeo ed Euridice (French: Orphée et Eurydice; English: Orpheus and Eurydice) is an opera composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck, based on the myth of Orpheus and set to a libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi. It belongs to the genre of the azione teatrale, meaning an opera on a mythological subject with choruses and dancing. The piece was first performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 5 October 1762, in the presence of Empress Maria Theresa. Orfeo ed Euridice is the first of Gluck's reform operas, in which he attempted to replace the abstruse plots and overly complex music of opera seria with a noble simplicity in both the music and the drama. The opera is the most popular of Gluck's works, and was one of the most influential on subsequent German operas. Variations on its plot-the underground rescue-mission in which the hero must control, or conceal, his emotions-can be found in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Beethoven's Fidelio, and Wagner's Das Rheingold. Though originally set to an Italian libretto, Orfeo ed Euridice owes much to the genre of French opera, particularly in its use of accompanied recitative and a general absence of vocal virtuosity. Indeed, twelve years after the 1762 premiere, Gluck re-adapted the opera to suit the tastes of a Parisian audience at the Académie Royale de Musique with a libretto by Pierre-Louis Moline. This reworking was given the title Orphée et Eurydice, and several alterations were made in vocal casting and orchestration to suit French tastes.

Gregorian sequentia from the 13th century, Attributed to Albert the Great, but is apparently the work of another German Dominican called Peregrinus of Cologne, also known as William of Cologne. The text begins with a joyous invitation to celebrate the Ascension in song: Be glad, all ye people, and sing our festive songs, for it is the triumph of Christ! He returns to heaven, leading thither the trophies he has won; and as he ascends, the jubilant sound of the trumpet is heard. 7 is the main rhythmic pattern of the sequence, starting from the incipit of Psalm 46 (O-mnes gen-tes, plau-di-te), but then the poet freeealy weaves among different schemes, from 4 to 8 syllables, and the composer moves it forth to rhythms which would be nowadays considered 4/4 to 11/8. Marin Marais (1656 – 1728) was a French composer and viol player at the royal court of Versailles. His most famous works are his five books of Pièces de Viole, from which these pieces are taken.

The Five Old French Dances were first presented as a single edition in the early twentieth century, arranged for viola and piano by Maud E Aldis and Louis T Rowe.

This is my arrangement of No.1.

I have also arranged the suite for wind quintet, and each dance features one member of the quintet

Ti stringo in quest'amplesso is a tenor aria from the opera L'Atenaide, composed in 1728 by Antonio VIVALDI (1678 – 1741). It has been realized from the manuscript of the opera and arranged by Sergei Pichugin for voice and piano. The aria may be an invaluable addition to the repertoire of vocal teachers and students.

It is available in the original key of B flat major (Eb3 – A4) for high voice.
