Xavier Boisselot studied composition at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1836 he won the 1er Grand prix de Rome with his cantata Velléda. His opera Ne touchez pas à la reine was first performed in 1847, followed by Mosquita la sorcière. Despite growing success, after 1850 he spent less time working on composition as he took over the management of his father’s piano factory Boisselot & Fils in Marseille. Flautist Jean Rémusat came from Bordeaux. In 1832 he won the 1er prix at the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied with Jean-Louis Tulou. He worked as principal flautist at the Queen’s Theatre in London until its closure in 1853. After a few more years working at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris he went to work as a conductor in Shanghai, where he died at the age of 65. Rémusat – generally referred to without his first name – is often encountered by flautists as the arranger of well-known pieces from that time. Plate no. 12099 / published in 1853.

Arranged wind quintet
O Holy Night (original title: Cantique de Noël) is a well-known sacred song for Christmas performance. Originally based on a French-language poem by poet Placide Cappeau, written in 1843, with the first line Minuit, Chrétien, c'est l'heure solennelle (Midnight, Christian, is the solemn hour) that composer Adolphe Adam set to music in 1847. The English version (with small changes to the initial melody) is by John Sullivan Dwight. The carol reflects on the birth of Jesus as humanity's redemption.

This arrangement for wind quintet is based an arrangement for organ and chorus, by Dudley Buck.

The triplet figure are shared between clarinet, horn and bassoon. The melody is shared between oboe, clarinet and flute.

An annual London celebration of the patron saint of music, in the form of a banquet plus the performance of an ode, was instituted on St. Cecilia’s Day, 22 November 1683. The occasion proved so popular that it continued for some 30 years after. A newspaper account of the first performance of the 1692 Ode informs us that 'the Ode was admirably set to music by Mr. Henry Purcell, and perform’d twice with universal applause'. The popularity of Purcell’s setting is apparent from the many sources that survived from the period and from printed extracts which appeared almost immediately after its first performance. The editor, Christopher Hogwood, is the founder-director of the Academy of Ancient Music with whom he has made over 200 recordings. He is Honorary Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge and Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music, London.

Air a la grecque - This short Adagio for flute and unfigured bass is the oldest known example of quartertone music, inspired by the Greek enharmonic genre. The piece can be found in Delusse’s L’art de la flûte traversière, where also a fingering table for quartertones on the 18th-century flute can be found.

Jacques Dussouil was the Titular Organist of the Grand Orgue Boisseau of Notre-Dame de Royan from 1966 until his death in 2016. During his studies at the High School of Poitiers, he was also the student of pianist Hélène d’Ambelle who was herself a student of the great French Pianist Alfred Cortot. It was his work with Jean-Albert Villard, the organist of the Cliquot organ of the Cathedral of Poitiers which would determine his vocation as an organist. Jacques Dussouil continued his studies in Paris with Noëlie Pierront and especially with Edouard Souberbielle

His duties at the Royan Cathedral lead him to also become a choral director and composer, founding one of the best Cathedral Choirs in France which he directed for many years. This activity lead to the compostion of a large number of sacred works, including his Mass in D for two organs and Chorus.
