The Vancouver Guitar Orchestra asked me to write a piece describing something typically Canadian.The first thing that came to mind was listening to the wonderful call of a loon while sitting around a bonfire; a clear sky evening, on the shore line of a Canadian lake.I tried to imitate a crackling bonfire with a triangle, and the calls of loon conversation, at the beginning and end of the piece. The mid section should show a pleasant atmosphere of simply observing and enjoying the evening in a peaceful manner. A very special thanks to Anna Pietrzak for her inspiration and support for this project.L’Orchestre de guitares de Vancouver m’a demandé d’écrire une pièce décrivant quelque chose de typiquement canadien.La première chose qui m’est venue à l’esprit a été d’écouter le magnifique appel d’un huard en étant assis autour d’un feu de camp, sous un ciel clair, au bord d’un lac canadien.J’ai essayé d’imiter un feu de camp crépitant avec un triangle, et les appels des huards, au début et à la fin de la pièce. La section centrale devrait évoquer une atmosphère agréable où l’on observe simplement et apprécie la soirée paisiblement. Un grand merci à Anna Pietrzak pour son inspiration et son soutien dans ce projet.

Glory of the West was commissioned by Dr. Zach Buie and premiered at the College of Southern Idaho on March 3, 2020.  Dr. Buie requested a new work connected with or inspired by the Mountain West region.  The inspiration for this piece was the song MONTANA, which I first heard at a memorial service, a great favorite of the gentleman who had passed.  The song was composed in 1910 and later adopted as Montana's state song.  Glory of the West is in three sections.  The first, marked Rolling Along, conveys optimism and wide-open spaces.  The middle Adagio section features a descending stepwise melody followed by a soaring ascending line, reminiscent of melodic contours in the refrain of the song.  The final section, marked Playfully, begins with fragments of a lively and rhythmically irregular motive, and woven throughout are echoes of the ascending lines from the previous section.  The score contains the Piano and C Trumpet parts in concert pitch, and a part for B-flat Trumpet is provided as an alternate.

Nel finale, però, rivolgendosi all’attuale compagno, la donna chiarisce che l'amore vero può esistere perché un uomo può davvero cambiare se innamorato.L’arrangiamento, per 5 voci miste (SMzATB) prende spunto dalla versione di Alessandro Cadario di Almeno tu nell’universo per coro femminile.Il brano parte dunque con un unisono di voci femminili che via via si aprono in 3 sezioni.Il piano regge l’armonia in queste prime 2 strofe.Gli uomini entrano solo nella battuta che precede il ritornello per sostenere il crescendo sulla dominante minore che risolve nella tonica maggiore.Nel ritornello l’armonizzazione è a 4 voci (SATB) con finale all’unisono con accordo vuoto del pianoforte per rendere la tristezza del testo (vanno a ridere di te).La seconda parte è pensata invece come un accompagnamento strumentale delle voci che alternandosi creano un arpeggio armonico. Al termine del secondo ritornello, un rallentato deciso e una modulazione secca che determina la revisione dell’andamento armonico delle parti centrali. Piccolo gioco con le parole a batt. 60 e finale classicheggiante.

Babcock lived in Lockport, New York, he took frequent walks along the Niagara Escarpment to enjoy the overlook's panoramic vista of upstate New York scenery and Lake Ontario, telling his wife Katherine he was going out to see the Father's world. He died in 1901 at age 42. Shortly after his death Katherine published a compilation of Babcock's writings entitled Thoughts for Every-Day Living that contained the poem My Father's World. The poem was set to music in 1915 by Franklin L. Sheppard, a close friend of Babcock. The tune name, Terra Beata, means Blessed Earth in Latin.Guitar and voice (Guitar classical or acoustic).
