Quilombolas are the descendants and remnants of enslaved Africans who came to Brazil and fled to the interior of the country, forming communities that survive on natural resources. Until a few decades ago, many of them did not have access to electricity, education and health. In 2019 I had the opportunity to get to know some of these communities and this experience was the inspiration for this composition, with themes that portray the suffering and also the joy of this population. A great opportunity to expand your band repertoire with an small but expressive brazilian music piece.

The first third of the piece is slow homophonic chord based motif, expressing the grandeur of the granite boulders. These then progresses to open arpeggios in the left hand, balancing carefully with strong melodies in the right hand. At times using triplets to highlight the fine balance of the rock. An excellent finale piece for any exam or recital.
