This is a 14 page work in three movements that has a performance time of roughly 12:30 to 13:30.  I composed this sonata back in 2012 and it was given a filmed premiere by Brett Parnell on banjo and Daniel Corr on guitar.The first movement is a sonata form that opens in G minor and ends in G major. The second movement is a set of variations on an old shape note tune known as Star in the East, and the third movement is a five-part rondo that recapitulates themes from the first and second movements. This sonata is part of a larger cycle of chamber sonatas I have been composing since 2000 which began with my sonata for flute and guitar and pairs the guitar up with woodwinds, strings and brass.  The over-arching concept that guides the chamber sonata cycle as I've been working on it is to draw upon Haydn and Clementi's monothematic sonata forms as a template for synthesizing 18th century galant era processes of gestural development with American vernacular and popular styles, often from the age of ragtime up through to the 1940s and beyond.

What inspired this arrangement is a fondness for extending harder repertiore to the students at lower levels, by making some of the rhythms less complex than those of the original pieces. This is to ensure that the tradition of passing on classical music (and all other forms) is carried on throughout generations. This piece has many of the fast eighth note passages in both hands somewhat broken down into slightly larger rhythm durations so that the young student or performer can play it without too much difficulty. There is also a bit of dynamic contrast thrown in throughout to introduce the player to different expressive text. Below is a brief legend of some of the terms and symbols used in this arrangement. Alpha-note names are also written inside the note heads for the player's reference.Cody Weinmann is a composer, arranger and a pianist who writes in manydifferent types and genres of music. Nevertheless, I believe these duets contain the heart, soul and essence of Beethoven’s melodies, rhythms and expressions; even though these works are tiny when they are compared to the Master’s great musical creations which have no equal. In fact, there is no comparison. However, my sincere hope is that since I have rendered some of Beethoven’s music as duets, his music is now more readily available to all permitting a greater number of musicians and all the people who hear their performances to come to know and love a bit of the world’s most valuable, breathtaking and beautiful music. In performing and listening to these Scherzi you will find the whole of each work a marvel of Beethoven’s skill with sections reaching the sublime. Few composers have been able to write down on paper music of such incredible beauty that it reflects the awesome splendor of God’s creation. What comes to mind immediately is Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony No. 6. It has been said, that much of his music mirrors not only the magnificence of God’s creation but also the radiance of God the Creator himself. In any event, this music is simply amazing and awe-inspiring. A joy to listen to and to play. I know and can safely say without any hesitation or reservations that this collection will bring you much enjoyment.
