The prelude length medley, Shepherd Serenade, presents several songs centered around shepherds. The arrangement is unified by the underlying idea that God is our shepherd (Psalm 23) and maybe the angels came first to tell the glad tidings of great joy to the shepherds because our Lord has a special place in his heart for shepherds.
