The original manuscript is dated 1723. They were first written as 'Praeambula' and 'Fantasiae' in a collection for his son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, and later rewritten as musical exercises for his students. The fourth Invention (BWV 775) is in D Minor, but the key has been transposed for this duet arrangement.
