(John) Friedheim.Scored for Cornet, Horn in F and Trombone parts with optional sub parts for Cornet (Horn) and Baritone TC (Trombone)The original collection consists of four pages containing three walses [sic], a march, and five quicksteps. It was originally published in 1836 by Gottlieb Graupner and may be some of the first published music for an ensemble of brass instruments. Friedheim was born at Prag in the Kingdom of Bohemia on December 7, 1792 and arrived in Boston in September  1834. John Friedheim, professor of music (as he was described in Boston city directories), is identified as the conductor of the New England Band on the cover pages of two marches-Bunker Hill Quick Step and Shamrock Quick Step.Friedheim appears to have been a competent musician (a clarinetist) who worked in the Boston area. His Series of Music for Two Bugles and Trombone enjoyed some success but its continuation was cut short by the death of the publisher, Gottlieb Graupner, in 1836.Friedheim was employed for a period of time at the National Theater (formerly the Warren Theater) and conductor of the New England Band. It was not as popular as the Boston Brigade Band and the Boston Brass Band. Friedheim was a busy musician and composer and the many facets of his activities in Boston included being a clarinet soloist, conducting the New England Band, leading the National Theater orchestra, authoring a book on playing the double bass, and composing works of incidental music for orchestra and of waltzes and marches for brass band including the work here.

At the time of composing the carol, Hopkins served as the rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and he wrote the carol for a Christmas pageant in New York City. Many versions of this song have been composed and it remains a popular Christmas carol. This intermediate level arrangement can be used for string quartet or string orchestra. I was bemused by the sentimental farewell to the unthinkably horrible weapon, the Avro Vulcan deltawing nuclear bomber, which was operated by the Royal Air Force from 1956 to 1984, which flew over my York St John University Composition and Reflection class in October, 2015 and which was retired on 28th of that month. The four-minute warning was a public alert system conceived by the British Government during the Cold War and operational between 1953 and 1992. The name derived from the approximate length of time from the moment at which a Soviet nuclear missile attack against the United Kingdom could be confirmed and the impact of those missiles on their targets.  3 minutes would have been more realistic, and that is the length of this piece.  Some terms related to the Cold War easily come to mind and are spoken during the piece. I used dissonant serial technique, but people enjoyed this lively fanfare when it was performed by the Orichalc Quintet

Schadl (A0.912497). Toccata In B Flat Minor, by Thomas R. Schadl, explores rhythmic energy and lyricism. The exposition (bars 1-18) consists of the static rhythm, where the the first beat is accented. The melodic part of the exposition is lyrical and has syncopation that provide contrast to the driving rhythm. The transition exists from bar 19 to 56, but unlike the traditional sonata form where the transition moves on to the second theme in the exposition, the main theme re-appears briefly from bar 57 to 64 and then it moves on to the second theme (bars 65-100). Sonata form includes the development section that involves the  working of a theme or themes that were stated in the exposition, but this work does not have a development part; so in its place is the transition that spans from bar 101 to 114, leading to the recapitulation (restatement of the first theme in the exposition). Following the restatement, the second theme comes in at bars 133 to 140 and is restated at bars 157 to 176; transition is inserted at bars 141 to 156. As the piece progresses toward the end, the fragmented portion of the second theme repeats with diminishing sound intensity, followed by a brief transition stated in the first few bars after measure 19. The piece ends with a loud B Flat, after a one bar rest. Anyone planning to analyse this composition will come to realize that since the development section does not exist, one may conclude that the work is composed in a modified sonata form. Toccata In B Flat Minor requires steady rhythmic sense, quick left-hand jump between bass notes to eighth-note passages in the second theme, and a good sense of rhythm when executing four eighth notes against triplets. Slow practice speed is advised in order to master the technical challenges. The piece is suitable for education and concert purposes, and may be performed in silent movies or stage shows.
