Bach scored the motet for double choir. It was probably composed for a funeral, as others of his motets but exact dates of composition and performance are not known. It is his only motet without biblical text. He set a poem by Paul Thymich, which Johann Schelle set as a funeral aria in 1684. Also unusually, the motet is not closed by a chorale, but by an aria which is harmonized like a chorale. The work has been described as having a confident, intimate and tender character, and making more use of polychorality (interplay of the two choirs) than polyphony (interplay of the voices), containing no fugue. The theme of the text is death as the happy moment when man, tired of earthly life, can confide in Jesus, who is seen as Truth and Life and the only way to eternal life. The name of this bird has always conjured in me an image of something of such immense size and, yet, unbelievable beauty and wonder. Something bsoth terrifying and awe-inspiring.         Musically speaking, this work is an arabesque, a short, single movement containing ornamentation. This term is also in art to describe works that contain two flowing, decorative motifs in the shape of S and U. In ballet, it is used to describe the shape and movement of a spiral. The gestures of this work follow the contour of these shapes and movements and embody the arabesque in all of these forms.

(Score and parts for flute and oboe are contained in one PDF download.)    These are short inventive character pieces that, in some places, also have a more sincere emotional depth. Each one captures a mood, or the essence of a situation. Conflicting Interest is based on a situation in which one person’s attention is divided between two different interests. Musically, this conflict is created by having the flute and oboe play in what seems to be different tempos and meters. The second vignette, Drifting Away, was written for a promising former student who unexpectedly died during her first semester of graduate school. A series of pitches that leads to the note A at the end of this movement, which can be thought of as the goal of her final quiet journey. The title Breaking Free describes the feeling people get when they work through a problem or have a realization that seems to set them mentally or emotionally free. Certain rhythm and pitch structures control this movement until it finally breaks free with a moment of rhythmic chaos near the end. Because of the rhythmic/melodic interplay between parts, this piece requires intimate ensemble work.
