The description of the male character of Valentine in the show was consistent with Lorenz Hart's own insecurities and belief that he was too short and ugly to be loved; consequently, the lyrics are sufficiently gender-neutral to allow the song to be sung about a person of any gender. This concert band arrangement has been produced from the jazz ensemble version by Michael Sweeney, created in 1988.
